22968, my oil filter is stuck Posted by mitseclps, May-12-02 06:34 AM
any ideas? i can't get the freakin thing off the car to finish changing the oil. i tried the grip things from the auto store and one didn't accomplish anything while the other ended up crushing a portion of the filter. when u're under the car lookin up at the bottom of the filter you turn it counterclock wise to get it off the car, right?

The rubber seal has probably softened or melted. If the regular oil filter tool doesn't work, try the metal oil filter "socket"; it's made to fit a specific car's filter size. It's about $6, and you just need a rachet and a short extension. Oh, yes, loosening is turning the filter counterclock. FYI, you might try applying a little bit of oil to the rubber seal before installing the filter, and you really don't need to tighten the filter too much. Just get it real snug.

right, counter clockwise... autozone has some rubber gloves that will be certain to get it off.. well, actually the gloves are cotton with rubber in the plam area.. i used to break my arm trying to get off the filter but those gloves work like a charm.. the rubber is blue on the glove and the rest of it is cotton.. i found them back where they sell the oil...

just use that swivel oil filter wrench thing, it should come off you just need to get it in a good position. How many miles did you put on it anyway? Mine comes off fairly easy and remember to hand tighten it and like 3/4 turn if you can even tighten it 3/4 turn with your hands haha.

DAMN that was rough, it's off now thou. i jammed a huge screwdrive into the side of it and pulled and it tore down at an angle until it reached the bottom of the filter and then it finally pulled and started to move. i have to post some pics of it, it's hilarous just to look at, looks like i tried everything but an abomb to get it off, lol. thx for the help
