2269, Do we really have Neon engines?
Posted by Danny95ESI, May-23-01 03:32 PM
I know there's a section in the FAQs in the home page but are Neons also 420a? Has anyone ever seen the engine bay of a DOHC Neon or driven one? How come on paper they have 10 more horses than us? Just wondering...

One of my buddies has an R/T neon. It is a 420A, just flipped around backwards. The intake manifold and cam are in the front and the exhaust manifold and cam are in the back. The different camshafts give the Neon 10 more hp than our 2g's.

I've always heard that it isn't more agressive cam profiling, but the fact they run higher compression. The Neon R/T requires 93 octane, i believe..

They run identicle compression as we. Refer to the double post cause I dont know how to cut and paste.

Because they have better cams? Why didn't we get better cams? We should get 10 more horses for looking better. I feel so cheated....

Also, why the F--- do my post always post twice?

stan said: Yes neon engines are called 420As too. They are simular but do have some obvious differences. The short block contains indenticle pistons, crank, rods, rings. The head contains Identicle valves, springs hardware ect. The obvious difference is the head on the neon is turned the other way, different intake and exhaust manifolds, PCM. The not so obvious differrences include different cams and slightly higher flowing heads on the neon. The long blocks look every simular (minus the manifolds ect) sitting next to each other and most sensors are simular or the same. Speculation is that the neon gains its 10hp via 1)chrysler imagination 2)PCM octane tuning and 93oct power rating 3) more aggressive cams and head. Probably a little of all three cause our cars dyno at about 114-115hp stock and most stock DOHC neons dont break 120hp at the wheels.

just to keep everything in one post.. :)

Hmmm...Let me think.... Have I seen a Neon engine bay... have I driven one... Oh wait I own a 95 Neon Sport with the 420A DOHC.

Stan pretty much summed it up, but 95 is the only model yeah with a slightly more agressive cam, they softened it in 96, and sell the 95 ground cams as a Mopar Performance item, goor for 5 hp or so. The ECU can actually take advantage of the higher octane unlike our ECU which doesn't do anything with it. The other thing I think that helps the Neon, is the DOHC exhaust actually flows pretty good, I think better than ours.

Yeah I've heard the exhaust theory too but I'm pretty sure it was the SOHC neons that got the softer cams after 95 and I'm positive its the 95 SOHC sold by Mopar as an upgrade to 96up models. Not sure about changes to the DOHC engines.

My mom had a 96 Neon until she got a '00 Montero Sport. I drove it one night for the hell of it. My car ten was a POS! An 88 Tercel. I got my 99 RS when it came out. Anyhow, the neon.... It felt nothing like our cars do. I took it up to 90 and DAMN! It felt like it was gonna shake to pieces. My car goes smooth all the way up to tops. Neons may have a weaker tranny? different ECU? I dunno. They are weak on the top end compared to our cars. And my car always had a more impressive top-end. She had it for a year b4 she tradd it fter I got my car, so I had the great chance of comparing them. I would drive both in 1 day to see. Don't worry. The regular DOHC neon poses no threat. The R/T on the other hand, I hear it's quite deadly.

make 10 ore HP(which I think is a littl overrated) but they take advantage of the 91+ octane by runing more ignition timing which our PCMs we not programmed with. They also run the same cams as the as the other Neon DOHC. Check out there broschure if you ever get a chance if you put in regular gas in the R/T the power drops back down to the plain vanilla 133HP. We have 140HP even and 1lb/ft less but spead over a much better range of power due the the heavier nature of the DSM. That's good for us because we get more more aggreive cams (but for regular gas) and power without the extra cost of the needed fuel economy or power loss from a "bad tank". We are driving around in 160HP engines if we could ring out some more revs and ignitiong timing (and I'm not talking about 3 measly points but rather 10+)

the neons use longer intake runners also whitch help in the torque dept. also i,ve read that the power rating is exagerated.
