22246, How much HP from flywheel? Posted by Talon95Stang, May-04-02 12:13 PM
I just wanted to know how much HP you get from a light flywheel (7 pounds)
I'm talking HP to the wheels.

depends on the gear you do the dyno-pull in. the lower the gear the more hp. in scc they put on on a focus and in third it made 2 or 3 hp. but the weight difference it made in 1st gear was about 250lbs, and that will feel like alot more than 2hp :)

I thought the 13 lbs would be more than a couple hp, any idea how much lighter the flywheel was that they tested? Any idea what the new hp and torque cruves looked like?

made me go through the "library" :) the flywheel was a focus sport peice. 12.5lbs lighter than the stock one. with the focus gear ratios the effective wieght savings was 260lbs in first 95lbs in second and about 50lbs in third. i'm not experts on dyno-pulls but i think you do them in 3rd most of the time. so 50lbs faster seems about like 2-3 hp, or close to it. i ended up taking about 115lbs out of my car in wieght redux stuff, and it was a night and day diff. so 260 lbs in 1st and 95 in second sounds great to me. -Josh
-ps i couldnt find any dyno charts for the flywheel so i must have made that up, whoops

I dunno about HP, but from when I was on the 3G boards, I was lead to believe that less mass = less force to spin it? So that meant getting to your power band faster while using less power to do it.. I dunno if that's right.. Anyone care to correct me?

all you get is 2-3hp.
and how much does the stock flywheel weigh?

The stock flywheel weighs somewhere around 20+lbs. so you are losing around 13+lbs. THe lower the gear the more the improvement, also you shifts will be better and your heel and tow will be better if you rad race.

Basically they said it, the lighter flywheel lowers rotational mass, in which case you're rpms will raise and lower much faster. This allows for quicker acceleration, but makes for a harder time launching.

Ok Thanks for the info.
but i always herd that it it like a UDP but better. The 13 pound loss should make it a lot easier to turn. like the UDP.

The less rotational mass is correct. It makes for a quicker accel. As far as launching? I have never launched hard and no one should unless they have slicks. By the time i spool up I'm already rollin around 15mph. Ps i have a hummel with unorthodox clutch stage 1 strapped. late mike
