has anyone here done any, or know anyone who has done any major work on a 2gen head? a friend and myself may get a head and work with it. my question is how much power can be extracted from these? since im not entirely sold on boosting right away, im going to go with all motor untill next summer. my friend is very knowlegable on mechanical issues, and knows quite a bit about airflow theories. who here has any advice, or stories, be they good or bad about builing a head for our motors. if anyone replies, please be as specific as possible and include any other info you can.

Go and read eclipse804's post about his dyno results after the head work, we have some info there. I have become a little scepticle about head work on an all motor app, for the moment. at least on stock cams. With a good set of cams (like Crane Drag grind) I think it will help. The duration on these should be long enough that you can pull in the airflow. But with the enlarged airflow passages I think the airflow has slowed down too much to really pack the air in the combustion chamber with the stock duration cams. The same volume of air is being flowed to the head and with the enlarged volume of the head the air slows down too much.

I think my new plan for an NA head is just to mill the head to boost compression, and maybe port match the head to the intake manifold and exhaust manifold/header, and maybe do a little smoothing of the airflow surfaces.

You're friend should sign on and share his thought if he has a good understanding of airflow I'd love to discuss it with him. I'm going off a basic engineering/physics knowledge etc. Nothing specific. I'd love to see what he thinks, maybe he could shed some light on this for us.

May prove me completely wrong. Read eclipse804's post and you'll see what I mean.

yeah, i read that post, its a little discouraging. i wish i had more first hand knowledge on these issues because its so hard to read one place that if you do "x,y, and z" than youll get x amount of hp. but to see someone whose done this kind of work and the gains are so minimal, i dont know what to think about that. i think were going to do the work anyway. if i can find a stock head cheap enough. all the labor, and space needed to do the work is no problem, just need some insight on what will be benificial.
maybe someone has had success with a combination of headwork, cams, gears.....if anyones got any suggestions and prices on other parts that may be needed for maximum gains, let me know.

I hear you Thomas. I have prices out used heads a while ago and I think the cheapest I found was around $300.
