21964, 37 hp claims by unorthodox pulleys Posted by Shifty, May-01-02 09:29 AM
How and on what care did they get this claim? Just by changing your underdrive pully some car got 37 hp? Its in this months Sport Compact Car. Also what does the Underdrive Pully do, drive all the belts?

depends on how much work was done to the engine before they added the pully. yes it does drive all the belts for your power steering, a/c and altenator.

im sure that was a misprint.. no matter how much engine work they put into the engine, it will not net a 37hp increase.. they probably meant 3-7hp, that seems to be more accurate.

They were talking about a built turbo motor and swaping from stock to their pulleys. Doesn't take much to make big gains with turbo's. That ad also wasn't for the eclipse.
You have to read between the lines guys. If it seems to good to be true, It probably is!

Most likely that was dyno tested on a 450 hp supercharged LS1 or something, that is where they got the gains. You can test on something and get a good number and then advertise "up to" and still not be lying. Just a good sales technique for them.

my butt dyno says its about 7-10 hp MAX if that.
i got the 30% newer udp from UR.

damn, the stillenism looks good. anyway, on our cars (well on the neon) at least, the AFX gave 12HP and since they have lighter stock pulleys its safe to assume we would see 15hp with our cars. i dont recall any dyno's but all i can say is, my car is the same with a pulley and 19s as it was with the stock pulley and 16's. pretty good if you ask me.

just cause the neon got some much and their stock pulley is a little lighter doesn't mean you'll see more gain.. 95% of the HP a UDP gives you is from the underdrive.. it doesn't matter what they say. it's all from the underdrive.. the amount of rotating mass you are actually loosing is something like 1% or less.. not gonna get any gain from that.

They could mean crank HP not wheel. The weight is a big difference, when it is rotational mass the crank directly turns.

Well regardless of what the numbers say, I felt a difference in the upper RPMs (above 4,500) Thats really the only go fast mod ive done that I felt a noticible difference.

lets see you can drop a whooping 2 lbs off of the rotating mass (UDP).. you know the crank alone weighs 50lbs (or more) right? not to mention the rods pistons and FLYWHEEL. like i said. it's maybe a 1% decrease in rotating mass.. and that's just the engine assembly.. if you count all the rotating mass (transmission, axles, tires, rotors) it's maybe.. .01% reduction in weight.. like I said.. IT"S ALL IN THE UNDERDRIVE.. that weight reduction doesn't do shit. Now I am by no means saying to not get one.. I think UDP's are great.. but as their name suggests (UNDER DRIVE PULLEY) their HP gains are from underdriving the accessories not from weight reduction. I'm just trying to get the word out on a commonly miss understood product.

i agree with jeremy.
but i must admit...out of ALL my mods on my car...i noticed the most difference in pull with the UDP installed.
oh also...turn on ur A/C when u are trying to accelerate fast...if anything it drives "normal" as if the a/c were off...no load on the engine, or next to little.

Hey Kaptain Mike. I was wondering what was the number for your unothodox pulley.I want to make sure I have the 30% one too. I just got it like two months ago and was told that it was but just wanna make sure.
Thanks

uh i dunno....im not about to tear into it to find out hahahah, if i can read it off the car whiles in on there...then i will tell u....let u know laters... PM me about it to remind me

breezio- u ever had a stock crank pulley and a udp in both hands??? i beleive its much more than a 2lb difference... more like 5-10lbs.. i didnt go weighin em...but it was more than 2lbs...
and ya, 37hp, pfffft.. thats prolly their best gain outta a bunch of diff tests...

Now all we need is an UDF(Under Drive Flywheel) Dont ask me how :)

The flywheel doesn't drive anything, so there's nothing to underdrive.
Get a lightened flywheel and lower the rotational mass.

a lightening fly wheel will make a much biggere difference then a the weight lost from a UDP. and yeah, I've hold both in hands.. it's at the VERY MOST a 5lb differnce.. that still isn't anything.. lightened flywheels are like 20lbs differences.

Why would sports compact car (an import mag) do a test on a domestic??
