this has probably been posted before, but everytime I search it doesn't find anything....

can anyone tell me the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram intake? Also, I heard that intakes are pretty easy to install, are they both just as easy?

A short ram is a intake that gives you about 5-8 horses depending on mods yes it is easy to install. A cold air is a longer version which sometimes and give up to 15 horses depending on mods it is also very easy to install. But the difference is where the air is drawn. The cold air draw is air in between the inner fender and your bumper and you have to be careful of driving in the rain. As for a short ram it draw it air from the engine bay and the stock hole where the air box once was but you don't have to worry about rain.

cold air is just that its an "extension" of the ram so as to draw colder air into the intake manifold. the Ram intake sits the filter inside the engine bay where i draws in warmer air.
about the rain thin, you really don't have to worry unless you are in a flood. and if you do worry then just get a Bypass Valve.

which one is better compared to the price short ram or cold air.. also does the brand of air intake matter?

I got a R-1 racing cold air from www.speedpeople.com 107.90 shipped. I have raced a couple of cars with it and i have bet them some with AEM and some with arospeed. Do u live in cali or new jersey or a strict emmisions state. Becuase i live in fl and there is no emmisions so that why i got the R-1. But if you state has emmisions get the AEM or an Injen because the are legal. Another any way you put it all the parts are made in taiwan so the pretty much the same. Because i have raced a 1999 gs with the same mods as me and i beat it and he has an Aem but and the designs are similar between my cold air and his.

i live in ny, they're strict about everything, so I would bet that they're strict about emissions. Is there any way for them to actually know if its illegal?

I'm from NYC too, if you're afraid about passing the emission test just do what I do, on the day you get your car inspected, switch it back to the stock air filter, then after you pass just put it back.

You short air is normally going to be cheaper but like someone said you will receive a little more power from a cai. I notice a nice difference in my short air and its one of those cheap ones off ebay. Either way its going to be better than stock.

I think I might just end up switching them for inspections if I ever do it..

your not going to see a 7 hp difference they are both the same pretty much if anything maybe 1-2 horses difference

Actually short ram intake is just like put a cone filter at the end of stock intake pile.

I had an open end arospeed filter on my stock hose at first, but when I replace it with the short intake it felt better to me. Anybody else notice a difference between the stock hose and the pipe for the short air intake?

Nah, he is saying that there is probably a difference of about 1-2 horses between the short ram and the cold air intake. Not between stock and aftermarket. Worth the money if you ask me. Installed a AEM CAI and noticed a difference in the higher RPMs.

Someone earlier mentioned a bypass valve. Can anyone explain this?

it is a valve that goes in your intakes pipe between the filter and the engine. it will allow air in but not water. when i got my short ram intake, it gave a nice throaty sound to the car along with a small but noticeable power increase. a bypass valve shouldnt make you lose any power, but ive been told it eliminates the sound that you get with an intake.
