I just noticed this, but whenever the car has been off, when i pop the hood later, the lower radiator hose has collapsed into itself, like from suction within the colling system. when i open the radiator cap, the system depressurizes, and the hose pops back out to normal..

is this normal??? i never noticed it before...

if its not normal, why is it happening?

Replace the hose. It's given up.

Could be the hose, I would try to see if there is any blockages in the system, maybe the line to the overflow tank. Maybe a flush and fill. Or it could just be a weak hose.

your radiator cap may be bad. there is theis little brass valve in it and if you take it of and try to open it, if it don't open then it cannot depressurize the radiator and let the overflow fluid back in.

^^^ yep.. definatly has something to do with radiator cap and overflow system. when the system cools down and needs to pull water back in from the overflow the cap and overflow system is supposed to alow it. and if a radiator hose collapese under mass depressurization (like you are getting) that's no big deal.. you can squeeze a brand new radatior hose with your hand and make it collapse.. the hose isn't bad.

was the overflow cap and line: they were completely gunked up.

def. time for a flush, prolly do one this weekend

Well, to clean the overflow bottle and hose, you could do what I did tonight, and have your radiator fan fail. You will overheat fast, and bubble the coolant badly in the bottle. I did this while I was staging at the track tonight. I thought it was a good use of wasted time, but the person in charge of the lanes at the track didn't think it was such a great idea. Ah well, the rest of the night was spend with a removed a/c and p/s belt, but the A/C button on to run the condensor fan. Eh, what can ya do... :-D
