So what are Catalytic Converters? What do they do? My friend just got one for his accord and just has it lyin in his trunk waiting to get installed. He seems very proud of it, but I dont know why. So what do they do?

Catalytic converters help clean up your exhuast emissions with some chem stuff that I dont know about. If he's proud of it its probably less restrictive.

They cut down on sound & pollution if I'm not mistaken. If he's proud of his new one he either had one gutted out (to allow more airflow).. or he just ordered a bigger one.

a converter does just that. it converts your harmfull exaust gases that are harmfull to the enviroment to less harmfull gases. There is a catalist inside of the converter that does the work. One of the byproducts of the converter is water, thats why when its cold out you see white steam coming out of your muffler, and you also can see water drip from it too..

My car is a 95 with 147K miles on it. I'm pretty sure the catalytic converter on that is still original. Could that cause the rotten egg smell? Anyway I'm looking into changing it, here's my question. Should I buy an after market higher flow cat. converter? Or can I buy a used one off a GST, will they fit? I have a guy selling his downpipe and cat. converter cheap. Will the downpipe of a GST fit our cars? I have to change that too.

You beat me to it. Everyone with an LS1 car who has either removed or gutted their cats gets this really shitty rotten stench afterward. From the research I've done, in magazines like Truckin' (used to own a '94 Silverado) and over the internet, it is illegal to remove or alter the catalytic converters with less than 50,000 miles on the odometer unless they've been damaged. If you're car is over five years old, you can get rid of it legally as well.

I can't imagine putting in high flow cats making much of a difference on a non-turbo Eclipse, at least enough of a difference to want to risk the fine and imprisonment that comes with getting caught messing around with laws passed by hippie environmentalists. (No shit.)

IF you have a CAI, BTB, cams, header, and exhaust you will get moderate gains from the high flow cat. Ive got 80+k miles on my car so I guess I can change it. And also, I guess I am a hippie, what ya gonna do about it :)
