hey everyone, i dont powerbrake too often as i usually dont race. but the other day i wanted to chirp my tires for a friend (to show off 2gnt power!!) so i went to powerbrake and while flooring the brake, i brought up the rpm's...when i tried goin over 2000, there was this loud, grinding noise that came from the engine. i tried again and it did the same thing. i dont want to do it anymore cause i dont think it is good for the engine. anyone know what the noise could mean? according to other posts, proper way to a lunch a auto is to powerbreak to 3000 rpm's and then launch. i cant even get close to that. what do i do/fix? is this some kind of limiter to keep people from damaging thier engine?

Could be the sound of your torque converter dying. Could be something else.

using the brakepedal to do a powerbrake? doesn't sound like a smart idea when you have a nice E-brake handle that will only break the rear tires so you don't have all that stress on the motor and drivetrain from trying to turn the tires and hold them with teh front brakes at the same time.. not to sound rude.. but seems kinda stupid to me. the only vehicles you should ever 'powerbrake' is RWD ones, cause you can't use the e-brake for the same purpose I just stated like you can with a FWD car. so you have to use the front brakes which means using the brake pedal.. but on a RWD it's not nearly as bad as a FWD cause the front brakes grab so much harder then the rear brakes.

Breezio, when i have the car in drive the E-brake will prevent the car from going forward when engaged. But, when i give it even a small amount of gas (enough to bring me up only about 200 rpm above idle) the car starts moving forward. because of this, i assumed the best way to launch would be with the brake pedal. Should my E-brake keep the car from moving forward even while giving it gas? If so, does my E-brake need to be tightened or adjusted or repaired?

I always powerbrake by the brake pedal too. I read on one of the dsm sites that you should "smash the brake pedal" in order to rev it up. My ebrake all the way up won't stop the car when i give it some gas so I don't think yours needs to be repaired (unless mine does too).

The only thing i can think of is that when you are power braking, the front brakes are slipping a little, causing them to "creep" or creek, maybe this is what you heard. When i had an auto car, i did this and the front brakes made that noise because i wasnt on the brake pedal hard enough. And you are power braking the correct way too. Not good for the tranny or tourque converter though..

best way to launch an auto? stomp on the gas :) hehe. that's just my opinion though.

cant powerbrake above 2k? well thats normal for a stock automatic transmission. 2200 max i believe. you need a different/altered torque converter to get higher, ie. 3k-3500, powerbrakes. hope this helps: www.levelten.com
