I was checking my spark plugs on my 99 RS and noticed oil on the spark plug. I brought it into the dealer, and they said that the valve cover gasket was bad and replaced it. How bad is it to have oil on your spark plugs, and how do I get rid of it?

as long as it doesnt get inside your ok. just soak it up with a rag or something, should be fine

mines been bad for over a year and no problems, just got to change the vc/sparkplug gaskets.

You need to change/replace both the valve cover gasket and the 4 rubber grommets that go around the rings of the spark plug wells....the reason u have oil on ur plugs is because the grommets went bad. They are around $3-4 a piece for all 4, ($12-$20 total) and ur valve cover gasket is around $20-$30. Total cost to fix replace would be around $40 and the cost of plugs. Mine are gapped at 0.035 in case u are curious.

only if the oil is in the firing end or on the terminal nut. i think what he means is there is oil around the plug housing which is fine as long as its not anywhere current fires.

Mine was leaking in one of the cylinders so bad that it filled the plug well and covered the wire and contacts on the plug and wire. There was also lots of gunk buildup on the contacts. In that case it will hurt performance.

umm just wondering, when I start up my car it seems like the car misfires and kinda studders. When it warms up its fine. Usually does it on a start up or if I let the car sit for like 10 mins then start it up again. Could oil on my plugs be causing this, it started happening a while back.

What i"m thinking is that the oil is getting onto the cold spark plug and makes the engine misfire and loose power. Then as the engine and plugs warm up the oil is burned and the car runs normally.

Hehe good thing I bought myself some spark plug gasket seals. Just need to install them. They cost me 2.50 at a dodge dealer just in case someone is wonder and 7 at freakin Satan.

Do I have to replace the valve cover gasket when I do it? Cuz I just got the spark plug gaskets. I thought oil leaks into the spark plug wells when the gasket seals are bad? The valve cover looks fine no oil seepin out of it.

yes, merlin i would if i were u change out the vc gasket too.... when i got my spark plug grommets changed, we didnt do my vc and a week later i was loosing a quart of oil every 10 miles....so i was lucky and kept filling it up every 5 min with oil on the way back over to the shop and replaced / resealed the vc gasket.

Well I brought my car into the dealership, and they replaced the gaskets and what not. (I'm under warranty) I went home and checked to see if there was any oil and there was nothing. I took ny car for a spin and checked the spark plugs again after running the car and again NO oil there. So it seems like they solved the problem. I don't really notice a difference. Thanks for all the feedback fellas!!!!

PS- Is it common for a 99 to have bad seals already? I would think the gaskets would be good still for its age.
