20393, K&N VS normal air filter?
Posted by fasterGS, Apr-15-02 04:30 PM
Ok so I made my own CAI today using the stock intake pipe and filter box. I thought about putting a K&N filter in there but is it worth it? I know they claim a HP increase.......

BTW I will have pics of my custom CAI tomorrow.

well i'm curious as to how you made a cold air intake out of your stock box, but yes, k&n air filters have a mich higher flow rate than that of your stock paper filter...it can't hurt.

the filters are the reason why most aftermarket intakes give good increases.. not the intake it's self. so yes, the K&N will be much better and you never have to replace it.. just clean it every 30K miles or so.

yes get the k and n. I made a CAI out of my stock air box too. on the back half of the stock intake box, pre filter side, there is a 3" or around there, opening on it. I then got some 3" pvc pipe and 90 degree elbow, and piped it down to where any other CAI would go. It actually worked well. Took some time for the custom work, cut some metal from the bracket under the fuse box, but it came out nice. Here is a bad pic, but you can see the pipe under the fuse box..

huge difference! i have a GST tho, but i put on a k &n filter, plus increased the width of all the intake pipes, and i could not beleive the difference it made. my car went from vroom to vroom vroom... plus the turbo sounds louder and makes everybody say.. "what the fuck is that crazy sound!?"

K&N is far better. But aftermarket intakes get rid of the flex sections and resonators incorporated into a stock intake, that are there to keep the noise level down for the general public. No flex sections to disturb airflow will increase power.

Una salus victus.

Hey Xtreme,

Do you have a write up on your custom CAI? I'm curious how you did it step by step.

I always thought that the ribbed section of pipe was for it to *flex* with the motor, since the motor moves back and forth, and the intake is on the motor and the frame of the car. It too might silence the sound, but i've never heard of that befor..

the flex section is exactly for what it's name implys. to flex because the motor twists and the other end is connected to the side of the car.. just like you said.. it's not there for any other purpose.. and I HIGHLY doubt it impeeds the flow of air any, since the flex ridges are outwards and not inwards. so as not to block any flow.

The flex section is there to move with the motor, and yes it does disturb airflow, air will flow out to the extents of the ridges and then back in to the mainstream airflow, not letting the wir flow smoothly. If you look at the stock airbox the piece that extends down from the airbox it is hollow and is there as a resonator, to muffle the intake noise.
