20115, Put 2 gear and nothing happen while racing Posted by pancito, Apr-12-02 07:38 PM
tonight while drag racing me and a friend went a few times, but in the real race, i got a good lunch then when i shifted to second, i was 99% sure that the shift stick was in 2nd gear, but i put down the throttle, and nothing happen, in acelerated, i saw the RPMS go up, but it wasn't in a shift, then i went to 3rd, then back to 2nd. and the gear was ok, no problem at all.
Am i freaking out for nothing?, is it the clutch, the synchros, the hole tranny, yes i know my car is old, 7 years and 126,xxx miles later, but hell is an import/american car so it will last, i hope.

These NVG trannies are funny.
If you don't throw it JUST RIGHT, with the clutch ALL the WAY DOWN when you're shifting at redline, one of two things happens: 1) you grind the shit out of it, or B) you hit a rock hard DEAD SPOT. The dead spots seem to me to be a point sort of halfway between gears on a shift fork. Look at it like this: (and i'm probably totally wrong here, NVG Guy or Armond correct me for posterity if i am talking out of my ass..)
1--3--5 #1* 2--4----#2*-#3-R
When you are in first gear, normally shifting is smooth, etc.. When you redline it, and everything is spinning at high speeds, you press the clutch and aim for second gear. Then you throw the stick, you are moving the #1 shift forks, and working the second speed gear syncro. If the clutch isn't totally disengaged, you are still transfering power through the gears, which causes the dog teeth to not quite mesh, so the gears aren't quite spinning equally, so they don't mesh. You grind. It's ugly. Say the same scenario, you go to throw second and your stick stops. You rev free.. Nothing. Well, you hit a spot that was between gears, as it were. What happened was that you didn't have the sifter lined up quite right, and when you went to hit second, the #2 shift fork was in such a position that it would not move into the place it needed to be. So it stopped. And you went nowhere.
Now please, someone correct me here. I've seen an F5MC1 MTX come apart. I've read the FSMs, but i've never seen one come apart and explained, nor disassembled one myself. This is the way it works as my uneducated brain sees it.. so those who know, take my pointless rationalization as a catalyst and explain the real reason it works and why i am wrong. :-)
In a nutshell, to actually answer your question and not rant mindlessly- A) your clutch was not fully disengaging which is why it was grinding, or B) you hit a point which was binding your shift fork in such a way that it would not engage a gear,.
Both have happened to me, whether or not my rationalization for why it happened is correct.

It happens to me all the time, but mine is from 2nd to third. Just like you said Dino there is a rock hard spot it likes to try to go to instead of the gear. Really frustrating when im racing. I actually just shift a little slower and it seems to be helping.

Same here, I can pop it super fast into second if Im ont thinking about, but third it just gets stuck if Im not careful with the clutch.

Ok i understand now, i think it was option #2 the winner there, i was very sure i put the car in gear not once, but twice, i press in the clutch shifted to second. Oh well another "You have to live with it".
Thanks for the info
