Posted by spicyMitsu, Apr-11-02 10:28 AM
my 5-speed 98 eclipse gs is burning oil like crazy, i noticed one dat that the oil light flashed really quickly just once so i checked the oil to be sure and there was absolutly no oil on the dipstick. i then put in a quart or 2 of oil in and got an oil change just to be safe. now a month later the oil is all the way at the bottom of the cross hairs on the dipstick! im not leaking oil, theres no smoke coming out the exhaust i dont know whatz going on. i dont drive like a grandma, but i also dont drive it hard constantly reving to redline every shift. anyone experoence this or know the cause? thanx in advance for any help.

If your car is putting a quart of oil away that fast you have a serious problem. I had the same problem but my car was smoking right along with the oil burning, not much but it was noticeable and I lost 2 or 3000 cool points everytime I left a red light. You are in the beginning stages, I noticed a definite oil loss and then gradually the smoke came, I would recommend checking for leaks from the underside of your car and also the valve cover to make sure there's no seals or gaskets leaking, the oil maybe getting burned off on the manifold or blowing away this is the best case scenario, worst case if you have high mileage it may be time for a rebuild. If I were you I would do the compression test to see what kind of life your engine has if you get good numbers you may just need valves and/or head gaskets/seals replaced. The best thing to do is find a friend locally whose and expert Mistubishi mechanic like I did, if you go to satan youre gonna pay.
Good Luck

Same thing is happening to me and I was told that its my valve gasket, so Im going to have it replaced. I burn a quart of oil about every 1000 miles!

my car only has 35,000 miles on it, and there are no leaks whatsoever. i guess i should check the compression, and bring it to a mechanic nearby, thanx for the help.
