19912, Bad ignition/starter or alternator???
Posted by cyan, Apr-11-02 03:17 AM
for the past few weeks my car has been actin gweird as i went to start it up, here's the deal. i look at the voltmeter as i go to start it this morning (i had thought the battery was bad prior to this) and it shows 12 volts. so the battery is good. i turn the key and nothing happens. after trying for a few minutes i decided to turn the lights on, so i click them on and then back off and it starts up just fine. it has done this to me several times, where it will do nothing at all unless i turn the lights on and off...so im assuming its not the alternator, and because its not the battery, it must be the starter right?

how much does a new starter cost, and what does satan charge to install it?
how much do yards usually charge for a used one?
and where is it located in the engine bay so i can see whether or not i can replace it myself?

Directly underneathe your turbo manifold. Your return line is probably a half inch away from it..

I would keep lookink into the problem, It is wierd that the lights on/off thing allows you to start car.

Could it be the ASD(automatic shut down?) relay??

im not familiar with the ASD, and actually im not familiar with the starter either...is there any way for me to tell if the starter is bad besides pulling it from the car? i havent looked at ut yet so im not sure what to look for (a wire, a plug, a bolt-on part) but ill give it a look next time it acts up.

I have been having the same problem for the past year or so. sometimes no matter how long i keep trying to start her up using the key, no thing happens, but she starts right up using the remote starter I have installed with my alarm. I just told a friend to get me a starter relay hoping that's what's causing the problem.

if you have a remote starter or a turbo timer, that'd be the first places I'd look.. it's gotta be some kind of electrical problem, Not the starter.
