19879, Dont the AEM CAI & A Cheap $80 CAI do the same thing??? Posted by xEclipsE RaceRx, Apr-10-02 03:51 PM
Ok I was wondering because there is a great price difference in the two, but anyways dont the $200+ AEM CAI do the same thing as a cheap $80 CAI (saw it at www.procarparts.com) Well they both go down to the same area right, and I would get the same amount of HP right. I heard that AEM is just over rated, whats pros/cons of these 2 intakes???

well, the intake pipin is made of diff material, and im sure that the procarparts filter is cheap....
the aem piping is made of special plastic that resists the heat emitted from engine while you are drivin...
id save da $ and get el cheapo, u wont notice a 0.5 diff in hp....

ok i have an aem cai and first it comes with a k&n filter that is worth $50+ just by itself it is powdercoated which is suppose to keep air temp down and the pipe diameter is made for our throttle body's and they are proven to be the best cai on the market
but on the other hand your might get 2 more hp w/ an aem but no noticeable difference with a cheaper cai personally i got my aem cause it was one of the best and i got it for $185 shipped and when people are showing off their shit and you ask em what kind it is and they dont know or they make up something but when people look at mine they know what it is

screw AEM I've never bought anything from those honduh lovin bastards. Anyway your paying for the brand name and the CARB sticker dude. My homemade intake probably performs better than that thing. So if you live in cali and must have that carb sticker then I guess go for it. If not then save your self some money and get that cheapo one. Hehe well I said they're perform the same I didn't say anything about quality :P

Good arguments.......Here are my $0.02 I had a cheapo with my car and power wise I could not tell much (but mine as a GS AT.....so....) But I bought the AEM CAI and I love it. For one the Rubber fittings are A LOT better, and the intake is VERY easy to install because the mounting brackets are already there welded to the pipe. Also it has rubber pieces for the mounting screws so the intake won't rattle or budge too much....Overall you see the quality difference. But it's your budget....Good luck.

Well how about the AEM vs. Injen? I'm considering buying one in a few days and I'm curious.
Thanks, Fearless

I ilke AEM more. Dyno proven to make the most power, and I think they even compared to Injen on the 3g's, and AEM made more power. It's really good quality that you can notice.

I love my Injen, I like the design on it. Pipe widens out aftter the bend from the TB. Piping is larger alowing a larger filter, and more air flow through the first two bends of the piping. The filter is placed right behind the opening next to the fog light(provded you remove the plastic piece).
I've seen iceman and prefer my Injen to their design. Haven't seen an AEM up close, so...

I have also made my own and looks and works great. Just bought the $35 cheapo short ram from procarparts and used the stock to extend down, with the filter on the bottom. Used the mounting straps that came with the cheapo to secure the lower half. Looks good from the top and the bottom half is hardly visible since the black stock tube matches everything else. It works great looks good is cheap and if I want I just add a K&N filter later. So save the money for something that will make a bigger difference (in power) and worry about brands for bragging when you have the money and run out of things to change. (UDP=$160 + My CAI=$35)=about 10-15HP (AEM CAI= $185-$200)=2-4HP same price diff power diff looks your choice but mine wasn't a hard choice to make. Only I had ARD P&P mani and bore the TB for $150 instead of the UDP (which is my next mod). Good luck

If you are going to make your own, try not to reuse the stock pipe the flex section really disturbs the airflow cominginto the motor.

Never realized the obvious (back to the drawing board)! x( Still better than stock though I mean it is pulling colder air and is no more disturbed than stock.

home depot carries abs piping, and an assload of couplers... i hookd up the extension mod to my shortram for a lil les than 20 bux.. problem was that the piping sat too low, bent, filter fell off, and i crushed teh filter...
back to the drawing board... it works tho, i felt a small diff, even tho my times didnt proove nething at the trak
good luck
