19727, Bad A$$ Engine Swap

Has anyone considered doing an Evolution 4g63 motor into our 420a engine bay? I've thought about this matter for a long time.....If you think about it they are actually on the same side as our motors (contrary to the american 4g63). If you look at the Evo's engine bay everything is layed out very similar, battery, intercooler pipe, etc...the only difference in layout I saw was the ECU was not in the evo's engine bay. Obviously it will be an expensive swap, but I just wanted to know if anyone has done it or thinking about it.......Thanks

I like how you used the $$'s in your title, because that would cost a LOT of $$$. Anythings possible, but that seems like a HUGE project. If you try it, make sure you keep us informed and provide lots of pics. Good Luck :)

Wouldnt you have clearance issues with the timing gears, you would need a humo on the opposite side. I dont think layout really matters.

Honestly haven't thought about the clearance.....I have just been dreaming about it....Cuz when I get technical I would need the whole front clip of an evo (but it could be an old evo also) so i could have: motor, tranny, ecu, intercooler, etc.... but 276hp stock!!!!!!! Another issue is the tranny (can it be FWD? or would it have to be AWD?) So....that's why I was wondering if ayone has done it....Thanks for the replies!!!!

Why bother?

There would be so much involved that it isn't even worth it. a 4g63 is a 4g63 is a 4g63 is a 4g63, EVo, 1g, 2g, nt, it's still a 4g63 and it's not going to work.

_|_ tia to u too. Some people, jeez.

ANYWAYS back to the topic at hand.........................

I wouldnt recommend it. It's cheaper to just turbo your 420A and build it up with pistons/rings/rods, etc and you can push maddd horses outta that little 4-banger. It's been discussed before and not worth the overhead cost and less damage of long-term abuse.

Here's a nother thing to think about if you get a cyclone. The reason why the Japanese 4G63 is mounting the other way around is because it's right hand drive. The 4G63s are left hand drive here so that's why they flipped them around. So if you were to do what you were saying you were gonna do you'd have to switch you stuff to right hand drive.

might as well save up for a turbo kit or stroker kit.

Good point Hades Omega....I am not really gonna do it, just a little daydream. Thanks to everyone for the replies, I was just curious to know if anyone had done it.

I've thought about the swap before too, I even had a guy locate the engine, tranny, and ECU for me. Here's where the problem comes into play...

For some unkown reason, the cyclone's (JDM 4G63) intake manifold is alot bigger than the intake manifold found on a US spec 4G63, and it's alot longer. Naturally the Evo's engine sits farther forward than our counterpart. The only way to begin to make a Evo engine fit would be to either 1.Cut into your firewall to make it fit (not safe) or 2.Cut the front supports, move you radiator forward, custom make new supports, and then find a way to elongate your fenders (prob look shitty).

I've done ALOT of research on the subject and even talked to guy who attempted it (it ended in diaster). You can do anything with the right amont of money, but you ask yourself is it worth it?

Some guy at Road Race put an EVO 3? Motor in a late model MIRAGE. I saw it with my own eyes. Frightening. Not sure what came of that project, but it was actually idling when I was there.

That's fairly common and easy. Mirage = Lancer - they are the same car.
