What do you guys to to clean the engine bay? I want to clean it from all the salt and sand from the winter, also get rid of all the grease and oil on everything. Is it alright to hose it down?

Thats what I wanna know too. I know we have to put a plastic bag over the air filter but what about everything else? I also heard we need to keep the car running while washing.

dont WASH it with engine running, just have the motor luke warm

cover wires and coil pack, filter , elec things etc

if you want to remove oil and grease the best thing i have found is carb cleaner

u just spray it on and crap will just melt off basically.. it gets all the gunk and crap out a carb or intake mani and TB (for efi cars)
i use it all the time i love it

im not a big fan of them spray on engine detail things.. steam cleaning is good but you have to be able to get a steamer

Thanks evan. When you use the carb cleaner do you need to still cover all electrical components and filters? Once you sprayed it down with the carb cleaner should you still rinse it off or will the cleaner just go away. TIA

nah i just use the carb cleaner on all types of metal under there with crap on them.. just spray on and if its thick just keep spraying and it will almost melt off, i just spray it down and wipe it with a towel .. i mean you dont have to hose it what so ever just spray on and wipe off.. i use it to clean lots of stuff.

just don't make any sparks when you are doing that.. that stuff is WAY flamable.

I clean my engine all the time, and use special chemicals at my shop to do it. I get the engine up to operationg temp, and shut it off. I have never covered anything in the engine bay, and i use a pressure wahser to clean it all up. Never had a problem with starting afterwards ect..We have an electronic ignition, so getting the coilpack wet shouldn't hurt it. In older cars with a mechanical distributor, water will keep it from starting most of the time when it gets wet inside. I have washed my engine at least 5 times this way, and never had a problem yet...

covering the intake and the plug holes is good practice. getting the engine warmed up helps dissolve the grease. i spray it with SIMPLE GREEN. then rinse it.
