changed timing belt yesterday and had some trouble with PS belt not wanting to stay the on the pump all the way. even with an air gun the UDP wouldn't go on any more so i think that is on all the way but my belt is half off on the power stearing pump. Any ideas? could my UDP be on a little crooked?

that could definately be the problem.

I was having trouble with my PS too, when I drag it becomes loose, so I ask here to the people and they told about a recall for the Power steering pump mount, I bought the update and never have any trouble, I hope this can Help!

Most likely your pulley is not all the way in. That happened to me a few times. Drove me NUTS trying to figure it out.

hmm..i dont even have a UDP but my PS belt keeps trying to go half on half off the pulley in the front.....its starting to squeal when i start the engine too...

This happened to me. I was using ALOT of heat and a 2 foot breaker bar to tighten the UDP. I am pretty sure I got it all the way on, but I could see how many people didn't.

Anyway, after 2 months, I was sick of the PS belt squeaking when I turned the wheel to lock. so I tightened using a crowbar between the ps pump and the bracket. A couple of days later the belt split and popped off. I figured I had overtightend, bought a new Gates belt for a crazy $35. That lasted for about a week, when I noticed a noise at start up. Belt was half on and half off.

This time I retightened and made sure the ps pump is straight. I believe by using the crowbar with all 3 bolts loose, I was cocking it sideways. I have a 95, so I probably need the bracket update.

I would use the tensioner pulley, but my adjuster screw is bent, and it is so much easier to use the ps pump to adjust. Obviously, I wasted money on belts because I didn't use the tensioner instead.

Hey fellas, dont work harder, work smarter.

Dont even try using a breaker bar or some crazy method to torque down the pulley in place by tightening the bolt.

Take the pulley off. Buy a $10 blow torch from home depot. heat the center of the pulley for about 10 minutes. Then grab a set of oven mittens and slide that sucker on. It will slide like "butta" and bottom out on the crankshaft. Then gently tighten the crank bolt.

You are done.

I guess you had the butter version. I used a MAPP gas torch...about 500 degrees hotter than propane. It got most of the way on easy, but that last .25 inch still required alot of force even after reheating both the pulley and the crank.

somebody will need to back me up.. but I'm pretty sure people were saying on here that it's a really bad idea to heat up your UDP. but I don't remember much more then that.. something about how it is actually two different peice/types of metal.

thats a valid point breezio, and i gotta bump this thread up, cuz i wanna hear the answer as well....

umm, the center of the udp has like an insert made of a diff material so the pulley wont "____" to the crank...
its like a chemical reaction or sumthin,

but heatin up the center and the two diff materials, im down...........

PROBLEM SOLVED! it wasen't on all the way. i was using a small compressor with the air cun and it just didn't have enough ass behind it to get it on all the way. It definatley moved at least 1/8in or more in. all is good now.

as far as UDP heating: not a good idea. the UDP is aluminum but the center "sleeve" is steel. if it were aluminum it would not be able to seat on the crank as tight as it needs to because the material is to soft. You dont want to heat it because metal expands when it heats and you can loose that integraty between the steel and aluminum and cause it to not hold as well...
