Im coming up on 30,000 miles on the car so its time to get the tranny serviced. What kind of tranny fluid does the manual tranny use? Yes I tried to search for this, I can only find info on the automatic tranny. Thanks

I just took mine to Jiffy Lube and they did it for $27.95 (Which is really cheap for every 30,000 miles)

They use 80/90 Gear Oil. Which is what is recommended for my 1998 Eclipse Spyder GS. (5-Speed Manual).

If you want to do it yourself then just call the dealer and ask them what oil they use or just stop by a Jiffly Lube or any Oil Changing Place and ask them to look it up on their computer. They can't charge you for asking.

FasterGS, look in your car's manual (if you have one) it will tell you what kinda oil to use and how much it takes. I changed the tranny fluid in my MTX ZX2 last night, peice O' cake. Also, just so you know, most MTX trannies (all of them I think) have a bolt that is the fill/check bolt, normally how to check of the tranny is full of oil you take out that bolt and if the oil level is at the bottom of the bolt hole, then it's full. This is also the fill hole, so when you drain out the old oil, you'll need a standard oil pump (like 4 bucks at any auto parts place) to pump the new oil in out of the containers. oh yeah.. and with all services done yourself, it's much cheaper.. hehe. My MTX takes Mercon ATF fluid, with the cost of synthetic fluid and buying an oil pump.. cost me 15 bucks total. half the cost of jiffy lube, and I wont need to buy the pump again, so only 11 bucks next time, and that's with expensive ass synthetic fluid.

Use only the Mopar Manual Transmission fluid!!! It's specifically designed for our NVT-350 transaxle. It's found at your local Mitsu or Chysler Dealer. 2 quarts fills ya up. Very spendy but worth it. Don't use anything else ;-)

Yep only use the mopar fluid. It says in front of the black quart bottle "Manual Transaxle Fluid".

dont use gear lube or auto tranny fluid.

I went to jiffy lube too. Can I change over to the mopar fluid though? Will any damage be caused?

changing to the 'mopar' branded fluid won't hurt at all. probably won't help any either though. It's probably just Castrol or Valvoline in a mopar container.. hehe.

NOPE. It's made by New Venture Gear who makes our transmissions. It is blended for our synchros. That explains why mine are gone, a shop put the wrong shit in.

interesting.. well atleast for my tranny just Mercon ATF is what it needs. and that's what i put in. I still find it odd to put ATF in a MTX tranny.. but ehh.. it's a Ford ;)

yes you need the right fluid, it is designed specifically for our synchros

also, at 30k you don't have to bother, maybe at 60k but at 30k it's not worth it unless you are low, then top it off

skinny_one, how many miles were you on the wrong fluid? if it wasn't for too many (like 100 or less, I would guess) then you'll be allright, just drain it, put some mopar fluid in, let the car idle (to get the tranny parts spinning around) then drain the fluid (this "rinses out" the other stuff) and put in the proper amount of the mopar fluid

I think that is one of the biggest problems our cars will eventually have, blown synchros from morons in the quick-e-lube shops using the wrong fluid. Because, almost any place you go to will just put 80W-90 in any manual tranny they come across and be done with it (duh, all cars from the 60s and 70s used 90 weight gear oil in their trannies, so it must be the same now), not knowing our cars need a special fluid. It really pays to know your car as much as possible! And, the dealerships are expensive for service, but they actually know the details onthe cars and don't screw stuff up like that (usually, that is).

I put the wrong fluid in my tranny at 30k (castrol syntec, moderately higher weight stuff), drove it less than a mile, then put in the right stuff. (I double checked afterwards and realized I should check on these things in more detail before I do stuff to my car, oh well) I talked to a dodge dealership, and the mechanic said I didn't have it in there long enough to do any damage to the synchros. He told me to just drain the wrong fluid, put in the right fluid, and I'll be fine. Well, the synchros are ok on my car now so I guess it's all right.

When I changed my transmission it took me a week just to find the tranny fluid our car requires. I finally had to goto Mitsubishi and pay somewhere around $15.00 a quart. I believe you need 2. Not sure though.
