19320, Where's the GROWL? Posted by 97_ESi, Apr-04-02 07:22 AM
I hear that lots of guys that put on a cone filter get a growl (or whistle sorta noise) from their intake after they get one. I put on a cheapier cone filter along time ago (same time as my muffler) and even when I have my hood open and have someone rev my engine I hear no growl/whistle whatsoever! Is this because its a crap filter or simply it just doesn't but I still get some HP outta it??
I got a APC Universal 3" Cone Filter on the stock intake pipe.

See that ripple in your stock intake pipe? That's there to quiet your intake noise. If you get an aftermarket intake, you will get the sound you are looking for. Pick up one of those $60 intakes off of ebay, I think it will work fine for your application. When you take off your stock intake, you will probably need to move your battery over a little to the right so that the new intake will fit correctly. Good luck.

Sweet... gonna get an intake eventually - just debating whether to get a nice AEM Cold Air Intake or save my money and just buy a cheapo short ram and get a few HP outta it.
Doubt I'll hear it over my exhaust though...we'll have to see.

I got an AEM Cold Air intake and I love the sound it makes when the car first starts and when I hit the gas hard. When you first start it, it kind of whistles. If you start moving the car right after u start it, when you let of the gas, all u hear is that mofo sucking in air like no ones business, lol.
When moving at high rpms it gives a nice deep sound. i really cant hear it now that I got exhaust. But I let my friend drive my car at high speeds past me and I can kind of hear the 2 separte sounds as he passed me. First the intake then the exhuast.
I dont have the bypass valve on it yet. I've heard it only really helps if you filter is tottally submerged in water. I prolly wont get one simply becasuse I dont think I need it. IMO

I have the the back half of the airbox removed and the stock filter tied to the other half and I get the growl. I did it to my sister's civic and it got really loud cause the filter is lying ontop of the throttle plate (it's a werid intake setup).

I much prefer the sound of a turbo spooling }> Nothing like that little high pitched whine followed by your body being slammed against the back of the seat.
