1914, egr valve...hook me up all
Posted by Talon, May-15-01 06:02 AM
ok chris told me about how he did some shit to his egr valve and it keeps the engine cleaner. WTF is this all about. and how do i do it and will it give me any extra gain in performance or help with the longevity of my engine life?

SKRILLA??? <--- sorry to call you out but you are a 420a god IMO hehehe amongst others here in this forum.

thanks all

1916, It goes like this...

EGR is Exhaust gas recirculation. At idle and cruise, (when RPMs are static) it will open and allow the system to recycle exhaust gas, decreasing emissions by reburning your exhaust. it decreases performance to a point by introducing hot, dirty exhaust gas into your intake charge, but only at idle and cruise- when performance isn't an issue.

It starts at an actuator above the #4 exhaust port on your cylinder head, flows through a metal pipe that runs alongside the drivers side of your valve cover, and then into your intake plenum. If you look at the back of your intake plenum, drivers side, near the throttle body, you'll see the metalic hard line for your EGR system. If you really must block it off (and thusly fail smog) remove the two screws in the flange and cut a sheetmetal blockoff for it. Plug that sucker, reinstall the screws, and insert a 1.2 ohm, 20+watt resistor
inline with the EGR connector to keep that nasty CEL away. (http://www.2gnt.com/dcforum/DCForumID13/1025.html)

IMOHO, it's not worth it. Who cares if you make another .5HP at idle or cruise? The system is designed to work with your motor.

for those of us that absolutely MUST have that .5 hp at idle, exactly where did you put that 1.2 ohm resistor? what color wire off of what plug? i wanna do this without getting the CEL.

i'm not totally against clean-running engines. i'm not trying to ruin the planet (hey i recycle!. LOL) ...but not at the expense of putting carbon deposits and oil residue on a nice (expensive) 5-angle valve job, port and polished heads, and extrude honed intake. seems like a big waste of money to do all that just to crud it up again.

in my opinion, if you're going to go through all the trouble and expense to do that sort of stuff, it becomes worth it to bypass your egr and pcv systems. i'm sure the EPA will disagree, but to me a clean engine means that when you disassemble it 50k miles later, you'll still see shiney pieces INSIDE. ;)

Hey, I'm in agreement there. I hate the deposites coming into my engine. It's called EXHAUST GAS for a reason, it's suppose to the leave not come back in. I've thought about coming up with something to just vent the Exhaust GAs and that shouldn't trip the EGR CE. But the resistors works too.

In line with the only electrical connector the goes to the EGR system. As long as the ECU sees 1.2Ohm of resistance there, i assume you won't get a CEL. If you don't know where the EGR mess is... You probably shouldn't be attempting this :-)

Whoever does it, give us a writeup for the mods page!
