Alright my friend keeps telling me that I should launch by putting my car in 1st (remember auto) pinning it, then at redline pop her up to second then at redline again to drive.

Right now I just (SOMETIMES not always do a brake torque) start off in drive and pin it - seems like the computer shifts at redline anyways.

Which way is better? Will I see any difference between the two?

I'm not sure about our cars, but I use to have an AT Celica. I tried that too, but I didn't notice any difference really. If I let the car shift on its own, I would actually chirp going into 2nd. So I never saw any advantage.

The trans computer will only let you shift so high. On older cars something that doesn't get power up to where the computer wants to shift. You can trick it by lift throttle and manual shifting, to force a shift earlier. But our car easily makes power through 6500rpm the shift point for our auito trans, ,so I see no advantage.

Stomp on brakes-
Bring rpms up around 2-3k-
release brake-
shift about a grand before you hit redline.

actually, if you drive an Eclipse, you can just leave it in low. It will shift by itself when you hit the shift point.

when I get just short of redline I let go of the trottle and then mash it again. This tricks the computer somehow and I actually get the tires to chirp when it shifts to second.

After that I just keep on the gas.

I drive an Auto and my car shifts at approx 6200 rpm. do peoples AT shift higher than that?? if so why does mine shift early adn what can i do about it...tia

6200 rpms? I can't even reach 5000 without hearing high pitch noises either from under the hood or the muffler. Most of the time my muffler would make this rattling noise when I go around 4000-5000 rpm. I don't think it's because I put a custom cat-back cause it used to do it with the stock muffler also.

I'm still not sure what to do to get stop it from doing that.

With regular driving, my car shifts at 3000. So what can we do about it? Drive it hard until it reaches redline?

mine shifts at 3,000 rpms with gas hardly pushed, shifts at 4,000 rpms with gas almost a third of the way down, 5,000 rpms with it almost floored, and redline when going WOT

Well said. You can't manually shift any better than the auto computer will. It shifts before redline, no matter what gear you leave it in.

anyone know where you can get a torque converter for our cars?? i haevnt been able to find one and the only think i can find is torque converters for amaerican made cars...thanks

I don't know dude, I know I have aftermarket guages but the #'s don't look like they are changed from stock location.

Ugh...how much improvement would you see by getting the torque converter?

How about the shift kit? I doubt the shift kit would do much - seems like the computer shifts right at redline and has smooth shifts as it is....but then again I've never driven one with a shift kit to know a difference. :)

Wish I got a 5spd but their impossible to find here. Hasn't been a 97+ Eagle Talon ESi for sale here(whole province) since I bought mine a year ago February!! And only one 97+ TSi AWD!!! Oh well.

I tried this at the track.

Starting in 1st, shifting up at redline: 16.9

Starting in drive, leaving it alone: 17.0

I power braked to 3000rpm for 2 secs before each launch. A little more wheelspin on the 17.0 run. So, basically, there's no diff imo.

Just remember, don't use overdrive when racing! :)

ok lets say u actually did power break to 3000 on a stock converter ... that means something is wrong with your tranny

.. ive been working on perfecting my launches and there is no way that manually shifting is better ... 2000 rpms is the sweetest spot to launch on a the automatic ( our stall speed is 2200) if you go any higher u will stall out and bog when u release. best bet is to release at 2k and u will notice is climb much faster ..


now ..wuill u run faster with a upgraded tq converter .

well picture racing against a rs auto with the same mods but stock converter ..

u both launch in tandum and both power break .. u release at 2200 i release at 3200 i would pull hard instantly from u .. just like a manual would ( trust me i raced a manual off the line and lost by a car ( this is without power breaking )

auto arent really that bad ... i myself love highway racing not off the line 15 second racing .. yes call me dangerous .. but what can u do thats how racing started ( some smuck probably cutoff someone else in there model T ford and it was on .. lol autos w/ turbo on the highway wont have the problem of building boost ...since we never lift to shift the boost will be under your foot when u need it ... sure u wont make as much power as the manual but u can smoke a cig and drink your coffee while driving .. and u can drive with your right hand lol we can get rolling blowjobs with no problem ..lol and i can pass by a manual civic with my hands in the air as i rip by them ...lol
