18940, S-AFC help Posted by Erik, Mar-31-02 10:56 AM
Hey I tried posting in the turbo section, but to no prevail. I need some help with some basic settings so I can get my car running and I'm not poking around in the dark. I have the 7 in/out and the car ran badly like it was a little lean, so I changed it to 6 in/out and it runs super rich w/ some black smoke. The copy of instructions were not great so I'm asking for a little help.

Have you tried the write up from the main page? Guy did an excellent job on it. I use 6 in/out, have done 7 but yes I seemed a little lean at 7.
Una salus victus. It's not about being invincible, it's about being ready; for anything.

I tried the site but I keep getting "Forbidden". I really need some help b/c I need to get back to my college house so I can get to class. I'm not sure what exactly to start messing with. I read the RRE site info(which is way better than the instructions) but it only offers tuning settings for the 4ger's.

7in 7out give me accurate pressure readings, while 6in 6out does not. it idles the same for me either way.
4cyl, throttle arrow up. Pressure type sensor, etc. the basics.
Ina nutshell, all you have to do is lean it down until it idles right - no black smoke, no rough running. Lean it down until the PEAK voltage on your A/F meter reads roughly .82-88 (Not at WOT, when the voltage is cycling!) it takes a few minutes sometimes for everything to even out.

OK. I'm might need someone to hold my hand on this. I did change it back to 7in/out and got a pretty decent idle. Am I leaning out the LO throttle side? The voltage flickers everywhere but like to stay within the .82-.88 range. My EGT at idle reads 800-820. When I give a little gas (only to about 2000) I get a little hesitation and when it comes down it acts like it want to die. I don't want to fill this board full of "walk-me-through" threads. I know that every car is different but I'd like to maybe get some basic numbers that you guys are using so I can drive her around w/o blowing my only ride up. I tried Guy's link on the mods page and still get the error.

So are you still running stock injectors? If so, you should be able to make sure all the LO and HI throttle settings are zeroed out, and it should run like normal. Out of the box, the LO throttle is 30% i think, and the HI throttle is 80% ..

18948, RE: S-AFC help Posted by Erik, Apr-01-02 05:54 AM
OK I reinitialized it.(yes I'm on stockers still) I did everything the way you said. It idles fine runs the same as before. I did look and the HI-LO settings out of the box are zeroed. The only thing I have wrong now is a hesitation right when I step on it. It seems to rev freely. I thought maybe it needed to be warmed up, so I let it idle until it got warm but still get the hesitation. Any ideas cooking? What the 7in/out do it? I'm not sure.

Well I thought I was in the clear and was just going to live with the little hesatation from off idle. I got packed and started the car and it died. Restarted the car and it died again. I kept my foot on the gas and kept it running and then it wanted to idle on it's own. It ran like crap and had the same problems as before. Is something hooked up wrong maybe? I soldered all the wires in place and double checked most of it before I closed the hood.

so hahah if you have one of those modified autometer gauges that only worx at WOT like mine you can't tune it at idle? Best way to tune that bad boy is on a dyno.

I have Corbin's digital A/F gauge and Autometer EGT and boost. I can't even get the bastard to idle right.

Make sure you are using a PRESSURE style sensor. NOT hot wire, not karman vortex, not flapper, pressure.
If it still won't idle right and a keydance give you a code 14, you have it wired wrong.

18953, RE: S-AFC help Posted by Erik, Apr-01-02 08:50 AM
Man I swear I'm not retarded. I went outside and double checked did the key dance and got usual 12,55 I have it set to pressure and 7in/out. The Lo and Hi settings are zero. It smokes and smells rich as hell with a shakey idle. I hit the gas to about 2 grand and it stutters and hesitates then tries to die.(just died this past time) I'm about to unsolder all that I have done reconnect the spliced wire and be done with it so I can drive. I'm really at wits end and feel as if I sunk money into a tool that does nothing to help me.

I'm gonna play devils advocate here and ask this question. The map sensor wire to your ecu ... you cut it correct? Then connect one end to the yellow afc wire and the other to the white afc wire (i can't remember which is input and which is output but you get the idea). Do you have a vc-1 also? I'm not saying that you wired it wrong but I just want to rule it out as a possibility. Give us the break down of the map sensor wiring.

18955, RE: S-AFC help Posted by Erik, Apr-01-02 09:33 AM
Funny I was just outside looking at that. The white AFC wire is going into ECU the other wire is going down towards wiring under ECU. The wire I cut in half was yellow w/black tracer.

18956, RE: S-AFC help Posted by DarkOne, Apr-01-02 09:36 AM
That sounds right.
Are you getting a CEL, by chance? Can you tell us the code?
What does your sensor check screen read? Are you reading voltages for all three sensors?
|
18957, RE: S-AFC help Posted by Erik, Apr-01-02 09:40 AM
I got readings for all 3. NO CEL. Strange shit isn't it? Has anybody ever had this problem? My throttle points are set at 10 and 50 percent. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Well I went out one last time to fool with it. I have one question. I was playing with some of the neat monitor features and noticed that I had no reading for the "Air-Flow" meter. Is this for cars w/ MAS? I had the correct tach and everything else was moving but that. I'm going to warm up the soldering iron now to undo my work :(

18959, RE: S-AFC help Posted by DarkOne, Apr-01-02 12:58 PM
Yes, air-flow is for MAS and MAF equipped cars.

Hello, My car's been giving me similar problems, when using pressure sensor set to 7/7, 6/6, even 7/6, it backfires like crazy and wants to die every chance it can.. Here's my temporary ridiculous fix for it, at least on my car until i get my FPR straightened out and everything.. I'm running on the FLAp sensor with 7 in 7 out.. It works fine for me, I have my % on lo throttle up to about 18% through 3k then down from there to 4k.. It works fine, just hesitates a second if i dont either go slow, or floor it.. But it drives normal and acts normal EGT wise.. My A/F is giving me problems so I can't use that at all. So moral of my story is, try using FLAP 7 in 7 out.. it works for me.. But if for some reason this will f- up my car, will a wise veteran please let me know? Thanks

Are you using bigger injectors? I'mn on the stockers now and was planning on getting some bigger 440's in the future, but wanted to get the S-AFC working first before I started playing with the injectors. Is the link to Guy's page still down? I'd really like to look at it. I did unhook the AFC last night so I could drive home only to be pulled over for my Altezzas by a trooper. Maybe yesterday wasn't my day.

i dunno if the last question was directed at me, but I'm still using stock injectors..
