1892, How much power would I get? Posted by 95GST, May-14-01 01:36 PM
How much increase in horse power do I get just by installing a Greddy BOV or by installing a performance pack air intake folter like K&N, Iceman, Weapon R, etc. or does anyone know of any better ones? I remember seeing a honeycomb one, but doent remember the name????

Well I'm assuming you have a 4G63 engine (GS-T), so I will answer your questions in that respect....
Most people with that engine just take off the stock airbox and bolt on a K&N filter to the MAS. Cut out that dump tube that runs from the BOV return to the intake and you will help free up some restriction. You could, of course, buy an intake (a lot of people choose the Injen), and there are some others out there as well...but there won't be much noticable difference unless you are pushing some serious power.
The only way you will see any power increase from a upgraded BOV over the stock one is that your stock BOV leaks when forced to hold over 10psi. get a boost controller and a Greddy or HKS BOV and you will be able to hold more boost, which equals more power. Of course, then you will want upgraded IC pipes to go along with the new BOV.
But before any of this, you really need to get a cat-back if you haven't done so already. Hell, a whole turbo-back is ideal for turbocharged applications.

the honeycomb one is the HKS SMF, i cant see it adding enough extra horsepower to justify its $99 price tag. get either an AEM or Injen CAI for intakes if you prefer name brands, if not get one of the non brands from ebay for $100. a BOV will not add much power, its more of a safety precaution and a tool for flexin! because it only functions under vacuum rather than during boost, it wont add much power. do you have a GST or a turbo'd GS? not to say you arent welcome here if you do own a GST its just that we dont know 1/10th about the 4g as we do about our 420s and you would be helped out alot more at dsm.org
of course you can come by here for all the other categories (audio, interior/exterior, suspension, we're all the same there, except some of the GSX stuff)

Thanks guys for the info!!! Mine is a GST stock. No engine upgrades at all, but want to start. Ok, how much PSI can my stock BOV hold and would upgrading it be worth it? Where should I start?

I have some dyno numbers just email me DeezNtegra@yahoo.com and I'll be more then happy to share any information with you. You can get me on AOL's IM under DeezGst
To answer your question, the BOV itself will not give you any increase in HP, UNLESS you up the boost. You can go with a more expesive unit like the AVC-R, Profec..for boost control, just whatever you prefer or get out cheap and get a manual boost controler from HRC, or RRE for like 80 bucks. Just please get a boost gauge first. Anyways, As posted before the only way the BOV will increase power is if your stock BOV is leaking...which has been known to happen with the crappy stock 2G bov's. In my personal expereience and from what I've heard from others who have replaced the crappy 2G bov I saw an increase in boost..After installing my IC pipes and BOV, my boost went from 11 to 14 with the AVC-R turned off, it varied depending on temperature outside..which is expected. Note: I changed IC pipes as well when I did the BOV, the 2G hoses flex like mad under boost. Anyways, The intake should give you a good 8 or so to the wheels, not to mention a hella nice whistle from the turbo. About a year or so ago with the Injen intake, Apexi upper IC pipe, Apexi BOV and AFC my car put down 191hp and 226lbs at 15psi. To my understanding stock is in the 170's, I never dynoed the car stock..nor have I ever seen a stock dyno plot so I have no numbers for stock performance, only hearsay. However it has been proven time and time again that the stock t-too small is only good for about 270 at the crank...I recently dynoed the car with Apexi AFC, Apexi AVC-R, Full Apexi IC pipe upper and lower with Apexi FMIC, Apexi n1 cat back RSR DP, RC550's and Walbro fuel pump and put down 228hp and 236lbs with 16.5psi. I'm maxing out the LITTLE stock turbo...it's a wee little thing...so sad...Can't wait to install the Big 16G from Buschur...I have a friend (almost same setup) who dynoed and put down 315hp with 18psi. So 330's are possible with a little race gas and 22psi for him. He has small ported and clipped 16G and webcams over me. I'm hoping to put down simlilar numbers with just a ported and clipped Big 16G. We will see. Good luck.

Since Im new to this area of BOV and Boost controller I was doing a little research and found myself laughing. Mostly at the prices $500!!! DAMN!! Further investigating led me to this

What are the advantages of manual over auto or digital?

A manual boost controler can only be set one way...from under the hood. It's just basically a bleeder valve is all and all it looks like. The digital units are made to mount in the cockpit and allow boost to be adjusted on the fly from inside the car. They usually come with there little perks to. My AVC-R allows all sorts of different types of Boost control...I can set boost levels according to RPM, Gear,etc...Not to mention all the nice functions of Peak Hold, Play back etc...But if you just wanna go faster for Cheap a Manual Boost controler will work Just fine. There are TONS of fast eclipse's using Manual's.
