18836, cam gear and the check engine light
Posted by 97GS AT, Mar-30-02 08:18 AM
I just installed the cam gears and the UDP by a shop, they said the check engine is always on when I have them, is it true?

And I noticed I have no air condition(cold) , is it normal?

neither of those conditions is normal.
You look under your hood and see if they even put the A/C belt back on?

Is your check engine light on now? cause if it is after they put those cam gears on.. they might be trying to cover up some mistake and try to make you think it's a normal thing so you won't take it back to them and make them fix the problem they created.

I could be wrong though, other guys on here should be able to give you a more solid answer.

All I can say is that it's NOT normal to have the check engine light on if you have cam gears, and the gears are set to 0. Even with intake advance 2 exhaust retard 2, I had no CEL back in the day. Maybe they put the timing belt off by a tooth or something. What is the code you get?

Hey , I just did the key dance. the code is 12 31 55, I read the code write up but are the code I got related to change the cam gear?

The shop installed my cam gear and UDP said they have a customer with the cam gear have the smae situation AND THAT IS NORMAL.

any info will help. thx.

i dun think dats normal, imo... they screwed up... installin cam gears, or settin the timing rather, is a very tedious process (so i hear) they may not have checked the alignment of the gears which throws that CEL... if the timin belt skips a tooth, or is misaligned, yoru performance/engine is off, and it should be fixed asap...

You're ok. Code 31 is EVAP solenoid circuit. A lot of guys get that code. It has to do with a leak somewhere in the pressure of the fuel system. It's no big deal. Make sure your gas cap is tight at least 2 clicks. On honda gas caps, they say, tighten til it clicks at least 2 times or else check engine light may come on. I don't think that it's related to your cam gears, but it's strange how it came just after you installed them. Maybe they messed with something...dunno. But no big deal..don't worry.

hey..guy, shd I just leave it like this? what vagasdsmr said is horrible.:(

If I took it back to the shop, I can imagine they will say ' I told u it's normal'

BTw, I heard some clicking sound under the hood....hmmm...

The EVAP system has nothing to do with the cam gears. So I would call and ask them what code the engine will throw. Then why would cam gears throw a EVAP system code. And listen to them stumble over their words. The only thing I see that they could have messed up woul be vaccuum lines ruinning to the EVAP system, in messing with the timing belt. So check the vaccum running from the intake manifold down to behind the passenger side front fender. Line runs form the manifold down by the AC compressor and off behind the fender. Check to make sure they didn't bend or mess up the metal line and that the rubber vaccuum hose is okay.

It actually runs from the throttle body, not the intake manifold. It's the hard metal line right next to the timing belt so they probably messed something up with that.

What shop installed them? I have cam gears and an UDP and I don't get any codes (other than the EGR code, but I removed the EGR system). What are your cam gears set at?
