18611, Starting/stalling problem
Posted by domr, Mar-27-02 02:58 PM
I have a 97 m/t. I just changed the timing belt and all that goes with it, spark plugs, wires, transmission fluid, cleaned my k&n filter, new thermostat, and put on an udp. This was in the beginning of January. Ever since then, my car has had a rough idle. And recently it sometimes fails to start until the third try or so. It even stalls right after starting sometimes. But most of the time, it will just start up with no problems. I'm not really sure what could be causing this, since so many things were changed at the same time. I am going to try changing the spark plugs tomorrow and see if that helps the idling problem at least. I'm guessing the idle and starting problems are related. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but are you sure that you put the timing belt back on correctly? When I had my belt done, the toolshed that did it put the belt back on with one of the cam sprockets advanced one tooth. I had a bad idle and sometimes it wouldn't start up right away.

Wow, I sure hope it's not that. Changing the belt was a pain, don't wanna do that again. It took a few tries but I thought I finally got it on right, and I turned the crank by hand to make sure the marks on the cam gears lined up again. So hopefully it's on there right.
