18469, Uh oh....ticking sound.
Posted by 97_ESi, Mar-26-02 07:57 AM
Alright I've noticed it before - thought it was just my cold car. Well now its warmer out - couple degrees below freezing and my car still ticks. I can hear it in my car with my stereo off and car at idle. Its coming from my front passenger side fender area - or thats where I can hear it the loudest. When I open my hood I can't tell where it's coming from because of all the other noise. Anyone know what it could be? It literally sounds like a ticking time bomb! Could it be just a belt warming up or something? After a 10 minute drive it was still making it.

Thanks,
Mike

well i had a problem like yours, and i pray its not your problem, but i had bad rod bearings, but if it doesn't increase with rpms, or not noticably anyway, it could be a egr connection that has come loose. In trying to post to find out what was wrong with my car i got a whole buncha possible things i had to check out. But check the egr connetion closest to the front of the drivers side part of the block, i heard from DarkOne that can make a ticking sound like crazy, it could be that.

Hope its not a rod bearing!!!

Yeah I've heard all the horror stories about bearings and rods that make weird noises like ticks - then the whole engine needs to be rebuilt.

What am I looking for / where is it? Just check to make sure its all plugged in right?

might just be a sticky valve. imo

It may be a ticking lifter. Put your ear near the valve cover and see if it's coming from there. Just don't get any clothing caught in moving parts. lol! If that's what it is it's no problem. It'll probably come and go on different days. I started using Valvoline DuraBlend Semi-Synthetic oil and I don't tick any more.

If it bothers you a lot, upgrade to the newer style lifters/rockers... Howell has them.

Oh yeah... and if the sound is coming from BEHIND the valve cover then it's probably your fuel injectors. You said it's loud so probably not. Just thought I'd throw that in. Good luck.

yeah, if the noise gets louder or faster when you rev then it could be the rod bearings but not to worry you don't have to get your whole engine rebuilt just get new bearings and get your motor flushed. it cost me about 370 bucks.

well if you have rod bearings that are fucked up that also means you got crank journals that are fucked up. you would have to have the journals reshaven or sumthin like that. hopefully this isnt whats wrong with your car. try sprayin some wd40 on your belts if its a kinda squeekin sound. it might wurk it might not. jes tryin to help ya out. good luck

Thanks for the help guys. I'm getting someone to help me replace my valve cover gasket because its leaking oil so we'll see if we can't find out/fix it this weekend. I'll let you guys know what it is. Its definetly loud - you can hear it as you walk up to the car - can't hear anything though when the hood is open because all the other noises. :D

Mine dose that ticking sound but only at idle and when the car is fully warmed up. i haven't noticed it causing any problems, it has done this for awhile but always wonder what it was. maybe so one know. I just figure all 4-banger tick like that.

dont worry...i am almost 100% sure it is normal...someone posted about our lifters on here some time ago. if i am right the sound u are hearing is coming from the front passenger side...sounds like it is near the wheel well...you also said that it is warmer...couple degrees below freezing...well that isnt very warm so it will still do it until it gets warm but im sure it is just gummy oil. you will probably figure that out when u do ur head gasket. So, dont worry until u find out it is something bad.

Why would fuel injectors tick. My ticking comes from that area.
18481, RE: Uh oh....ticking sound for me toO.

I hear tickin noise toO in my car and it has only gotten worser with the warmer weather. You can hear it in the front drivers side area tho. I think its a strut, but I dont know. When I cruise around in nuetral u hear it, but then in gear you dont hear it, well sometimes you do, but not as much as in nuetral. So whats up guys whats our probelm? If I take it to satan to see whats wrong, will it charge me?

I have the same tick (passenger side on motor). On my car as soon as the engine warms up it is completely gone. My mechanic buddy says that it is probably a misaligned valve or lifter. We are gonna replace the valve cover and will probably check it out then.
