What's up all? To start, I don't own an Eclipse. Hell, my car isn't even Japanese! You'll see me with the same username at Tauruscarclub.com... but anyway, about the PVC CAI...

We thought it was a great idea too! And some of us began to implement it, until we found out something disturbing. I'm not sure that this will you effect you as much as us, since we all have V6's, and higher underhood temps, but it's still something to consider.

If you weren't aware, PVC is the abbreviation for Poly Vinyl Chloride. As it's heated, PVC won't immediately melt. However, what it will do is decompose. One of the decomposition byproducts is Hydrocloric Acid. HCl for short. The HCl will make it's way to your engine in a gaseous state, and over time, will seriously mess up things. To the point that one day, well, you gonna find yourself looking for a new engine.

This was a big issue with us, because our underhood temps are insane most of the time. I'm not sure if it's the same with you guys, but even if it isn't, it's something to consider. Good luck with your rides...

I think our motor are too small to have that problem. But- if that is the case, Just vent it to outside the engine compartment.

well i took mine off a while ago, but I didnt realize that that could happen. Well i didnt take it off, rather it fell off and I ran it over hehe. I have a bored stock intake for now until I eventually go turbo

soldier if you dont have any mods done yet you should do the free airbox mod. It gives a very noticeable difference in performance and the sound is pretty amazing. I plan on doing this until I go turbo and no longer need the intake piping

Thats why you shouldn't use PVC for a bong, the gas it creates when its hot is bad for you, real bad. of course so is smoking but you get the point

same is true for copper, DONT use copper to make a pipe/bong

The problem is not so much the gas developed outside the tube, but the gas developed inside that gets sucked into your engine. That is what causes the damage.

What about using ABS plastic? I looked for this at the hardware store and couldn't find it. Anyone know where to get some? Thanks.

abs is okay but its too expensive to use, its cheaper to buy a procarparts intake

Isn't the Iceman made of a pvc like plastic? How is that different?

auctually what i'm planning on doing now (thanks for the info racer x) is buying the part of the intake in abs (the part by the motor) and keeping the rest pvc since that part dosen't get hot. that way i can still cut back on costs.

To make things really easy its easy as hell just to buy a cone intake and stick that on the end of your stock plumbing.

Im sure it would cost about the same as PVC piping $15 and it looks better, performs the same, no worries, cheaper, and it isnt a freaking PVC pipe.

Plus, you can just buy a generic intake with chrome piping for 80 bucks or less, it looks nice and you won't have to worry about these things. Just save up for it...

i agree with eclipse804. jes save up for a generic brand cai. until then jes do the free air box mod.

you can find some pretty cheap cai. i found mine for 40 bux. it was AEM too. look around you will find sumthin.

and yes PVC piping is poisonous too if it catches on fire your gonna die haha that's why their careful where they put it in buildings.
