I posed a question a while back about getting a datalogger for my 1995 car. I am OBDI, like the rest of the 1995s, and no one had an answer. Most people said that I would have to wait until someone made a datalogger for us. Someone (I don't remember who) told me that we have OBDI and OBDII connectors. My car does have both connectors (weird). I figured that if you've got the connector, the datalogger should work. I finally got a chance to borrow an OBDII datalogger off of a 4G63 guy. It actually works on my car. All the functions worked without a hitch. I really needed a datalogger to tune my car, so this is great news. Now the question is, "will an OBDI logger work too?" The OBDI system is more powerful (can log more data), so I would prefer to use it. I'm really thinking about buying an OBDI logger and just trying it. If it doesn't work, I'll sell it. Does anyone have a 1G friend with an OBDI logger? Can you borrow his logger to see if it works on a 1995 NT? That would really be helpful.

That's good news!

For some reason though, I seem to think that I only have an OBD-I port.... I dunno, I'll check again sometime. My friend has the SnapOn Scanner ($$$$$) and I think he has both OBD-I and OBD-II "plugins" for it. Unfortunately though, my car has been out of order for a *few* months... I will check this out the moment I get my car running again (est. 1 month :-( )

It would be awesome to be able to check for timing retard (i.e. knock).. a great way to tune.

BTW I just have to tell you that every time I see your car, I can't help noticing how much of a "Twin" it is to mine....

OBD stands for "On Board Diagnostics"

OBDI and OBDII arose due to some "standards" set by (I think) the EPA and CARB in order to make modern cars more "emission friendly".

Basically OBDII cars have a whole bunch of extra sensors in the car that monitor the car and make sure that the engine is burning the gasoline efficiently, that the catalytic converter is working fine etc...

So with all the extra sensors and standards, they put a port inside the car so that mechanics can drive the car while viewing all the data from the sensors.

Now for tuning purposes... Since the car's PCM (aka ECU) has so many fancy sensors gathering all this data, you can collect some of the data, interpret it, it and use it for tuning your car!

A good example would be...
You can log the RPM of the engine versus the O2 sensor voltage..
Then later in the comfort of your home (or in the pits of the dragstrip :-) ) you can look over the data and see where the car is running lean, where it's running rich and then you can go to your car and make the adjustments.

However, you can NOT tune the car through the OBDII data ports. The data ports are simply for acquiring data. If you are going to make changes to the tuning of the car, then you'd use your SAFC, MSD DIS-2, or whatever...

Yeah, they are pretty similar. I caught some flack from a fellow Talon owner yesterday for turning my car into an Eclipse. I still like the Talon front and back bumpers, but I'm looking for a way to disguise the orange parking and tail lights. Not sure what to do...

Well, what you could do for the tailights, is paint the orange part black with tailight paint. It actually looks pretty cool on Talons. For the front corners, you could paint them too, but it might look better if you got clear lenses.
