17818, Detailed Tune-up Report

Ok so yesterday I decided to do a little overhaul on the old car and finally decided to install the AEM CAI that's been in my room for months.

The install for the CAI was cake. It's worth the extra few bucks for the AEM intake given the quality and ease of installation. Even better, using my friend's new auto meter (have to find out brand and model) we were able to measure HP before and after the installation of the intake (more on this below).

In addition to the intake, I also installed NGK plugs and Magnecor wires. I used the stock temperature range (6) but I am going to order 1 range hotter as many people on this board do. While changing the plugs, I noticed some nice oil in the spark plug wells and oil leaking from beneath the valve cover. I went to satan today to get the valve cover gasket and plug well gaskets replaced and I got ripped off as expected.

Now for the performance results. After a few runs of 0-60 before and after the intake, wires, and plugs, we concluded an increase of about 7 HP. I was very pleased with the sound and performance above 4000 RPM. The meter also told us that the most power was being made right around 7000 RPM when I was about to shift to 3rd. I'm going to try to get some 1/4 miles runs with the meter to get a better estimate on the HP.

Any questions, comments, suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

Oil in your spark plug wells may mean that your headgasket is leaking. A lotta people here know more about this subject, so I'll let them divulge into this more. Also, IF it is the headgasket, get the MLS headgasket for the 420A from any Dodge\Chrysler dealer.

Don't scare the poor guy.

Oil in your plug wells is common. There are four o-rings that circle those wells between the valvecover and the head itself. Sometimes they leak, and you end up with oil in your plug wells. No big deal.

Yeah that's what I figured- I wasn't too concerned that it was a head gasket issue. By the way, the meter that we used to get the HP measurements was a Race Technology AP22. You can check out the details of it here: http://www.race-technology.com/WebPage/Products/Accelerometer/PerformanceMeterIntro.html.
