17525, Hey you guys with cam gears....
Posted by brynden29, Mar-15-02 12:35 AM
I just got mine installed yesterday and had them adjusted to intake plus 2 degrees and exhaust retard 2 degrees. I was wondering if any of you that have them adjusted this way noticed a rough idle? I notice my car shakes a little at idle now. Is that a side effect of adjusting the gears? Thanks for the info.

My car idles like stock. No two cars roll off the line the exact same so it could be different setting you need. Set the cam gears to 0 and see how it idles to make sure that is really the problem.

So I guess that I can just loosen the allen bolts on the cam gears and turn them to 0 right?

hey bryden.. go ahead and call aem and buy thier new hex nuts.. so you can adjust your cam gears using a 8mm open end instead of the allen key.

marcus told me about it and said it would make things easier..

10bucks should cover it he said

I might just do that, by the way Evan, do you know about the marks on the gears? If they really are 2 degrees for every mark?

Yes they are really 2 degrees per mark. I have mine set +2/-2 and I personally think it idles just as smooth as it did stock.

Just to clarify, you have yours set on one mark for advance and one mark for retard? Mine are set on the second mark for each, so mine are actually set to 4 degrees advance and 4 degrees retard?

Yep that would be correct, you might wanna back them off back to the first mark for each. I haven't noticed much of a change to the idle either but mine are at +2/-2....back them off and see what happens....

Ya you got them set wrong. You only want to go one mark each way since it's 2 degrees per mark. And the new hex 8 mm bolts have to be ordered through an AEM dealer. You can't get it directly from them.

So what will happen if I continue running with them set to 4 degrees advance and 4 degrees retard?

It shouldn't hurt anything, you may not be making the most power that you can though.

Plus your rough idle is another negative side effect of running such wild overlap (8 degrees). I would change it back to intake advance 2 exhaust retard 2. On the dyno, when I advanced or retarded too much it didn't show as much gain.
