I don't know about engines but this is bothering me



I cleaned it up before but it came back, I'm thinking it could be a leak or something

Mine has that too. I think it's just a small oil leak. I'm moving this to Performance/Engine since it "may" have to do with an engine leak.

ok here's the deal. on the side of the head near where you circled, that piece that is bolted there and has a plug in it. It's called the crank angle sensor. unbolt that and take a look on the inside. there is an o-ring in it. satan says there is nothing in there and should not leak. WRONG!!! there is an o-ring in there and the only way to get that is by buying the gasket kit. well all i did was get gasket maker, cleaned off the crank angle sensor, and put gasket maker on there and let if tack up a little bit, then made sure that i put the part on right the first time(no room for errors on this) then bolted it down being careful not to tighten them too tight cause it's only plastic. it was all taken care off and hasn't leaked since.

Yep mine has the same mystery spot, been there since I bought it 2 years ago, hasn't really grown so I chalked it up to dirt also. Thx for the info......

No big deal. it's a small valve cover gasket leak.

Interesting, that was on my engine too (alot smaller, but there), but when I cleaned it off over a year ago, it hasn't come back (at leat, I haven't noticed any oil or dirt there lately).

I'll check again. I'd say a little bit of "weeping" through that O ring isn't a problem unless it's noticeably wet with oil and not just some brown crud there.

Now, if it was much lower where the head and the engine meet, than I'd worry.

looks lile a valve cover gasket leak to me also. i just changed mine yesterday. i had some oil in my spark plug wells. no biggy, but is isnt hard to fix either.

prob just ur vc gasket just change it.. mine used to get dirty like that to.. but i always keep my motor effin clean so it wasnt bad..
since i changed the gasket it hasnt come back

use carb cleaner.. its the shiizzle

i am telling you guys, it's the crank angle sensor. i had the same exact problem, even after i replaced the valve cover. if you take the crank angle sensor off, you'll find an o-ring in it. either get a full gasket kit, or just use gasket maker/seal and put it on there.

This has been on every 2GNT i have ever seen under the hood of.

It may be related to the cam angle sensor, honestly i've never looked at it from that litteral angle. For me, i always considered it a factory defect in the valve cover gasket. Positive crank case pressure exagerates the problem. I cleaned it off once, added a check valve inline with my PCV to keep the boost out of my crankcase, and never had a problem with it again.

MHO - it's more of a stain than a leak. It's a product of the valve cover gasket aging. Replace it, keep an eye on it. You'll be fine.
