16982, 2.4L Spydre w/turbo

To somewhat go along with recent posts about converting the 420a to a 2.4L..

I couldn't find any information in past posts about it.. so please point me to it if it does exist. Do the bolt-on kits fit the 2G 2.4L Spydre? Looking at pics, I can see the engine compartment layout is somewhat different, does anyone have one in use? If so, did it fit ok?

the 2.4L in the spyder is not the motor they are talking about swapping up to. they are talking about the 2.4L in the Stratus/Cirrus which is based on the 420a. the 2.4L in the eclipse spyder is based on the 4g63 (called 4g64) like the stock turbo 2G's have. the only kit that would bolt up to a non-turbo spyder motor.. would probably be a stock kit ripped off of a factory turbo spyder, or maybe from a normal 2g-turbo, but i doubt it.

I hope that answers your questions..

Acutally I think star makes a bolt on turbo kit for the 2.4 liter spyder 4g64 motor. I saw one last year at a socal meet. It was supposed to be pretty fast.

wow there is hope for the 4g64 engine yet.....besides "nawz".

Depending on your knowledge of forced induction you can always make a custom turbo kit.

Well I'm pretty sure the turbo Spydre is a 420a too.. looks like just the GS Spydre is 4g64.. I haven't heard back from Star yet, but it didn't look like they had anything on their website. bummer...

Huh? The Spyder GS-T (turbo stock) is a 4g63 just like a gs-t or gsx. There are no 420a engines whatsoever in Spyders. You're right, all nonturbo spyders have a 4g64 engine, and this one was definitely a turbo'd 4g64 (and I'm 90% sure he said it was a star kit). He was at a socal dsm meet at Road Race, and some other 2gnt board members checked out his car more, so hopefully they can give some more info.

Ahh, ok. Yeah, if anyone else has info please do post.

It is a star kit. Custom job. I believe it is the only turbo 4g64 out there.

hope this helps.

holy crap. 4g64's are SOHC? shit, i didn't know that. hehe.

This is my first time posting because this actually relates to me. I have a 1997 spyder 4g64. And Star does make a kit for us, but it really isn't worth the price it's around $3,000, and you only gain like 45-65hp. http://www.overboost.com/obs/product.asp?pid=10258. I don't know about you guys but I need more power. If you join the 4g64 mailing list on yahoo, there is a lot of talk about it, and also about custom jobs, (which is the way I'm going.) If you are interested e-mail me, I have the parts list for the install. Most of the parts come straight off of the 4g63. So that means you can get used parts, and save a couple of thousand $$$. This summer I am building a complete new engine for my baby, w/turbo and possibly nitrous. Like I said just e-mail me if you need links or the list.
(by the way, this is one of my favorite forums, I check it before I check my e-mail, lol.)

and by the way, we can convert our litte SOHC to your guys DOHC. I am still debating whether or not to do it. Its a simple head swap, and some filling of some holes, nothing hard. I have the link if anyones interested.

Hey, thanks for the link! That stage 2 kit is actually the same price as the star stage 2 for the 420a. I guess there are just less gains on the 4g64. How high can you boost it on stock internals?

I think they are topping out at like 7 or 8psi. But I am not sure.

a SOHC can only do so much, wouldn't just be more efficient and cost effective to just swap to the 4g63, then push that engine to the limits.

Hmm.. so you think the limits with the star kit are do to the 4g64 SOHC? I was assuming it was the fuel pump and injectors since it sounds like others are getting much better results on the engine with custom jobs. I wonder if doing the head swap mentioned above would actually suffice if that is the case?

if i was in the position of having a 4g64 and was stock. i would look at slapping on a DOHC head before going turbo. the head will increase the turbo's pructivity exponentially. plus it seems cheaper to goto a local yard and find a wrecked 1g, (which have better performing heads than the 2g 4g63's) and find a way to throw that on. if it got to hairy i'd start debating motorswaps say a 4g63. i've also heard that the exh. mani on the 4g64 is interchangeable with 4g63 mani's. if that's true or if some machining was involved that would be another great possibility. all you would really need is the mani and turbo from a 1g 2g would work if the 1g does but 2g's have smaller turbos' soo better off with the 1g.

Not really, the price for the turbo kit depends on how cheap you can get 4g63 used turbo parts. Plus, Why do what everyone else is doing?? If I had wanted a 4g63 I would have bought one, no one knows the limits of the 4g64 yet. Thats what makes it fun.

I think youre right, it is the fuel system that's holding this kit back. But we won't know for sure till someone buys it and tunes the crap out of it. I am doing some research on he DOHC swap though, no one has confirmed the install yet.(that I know of anyway)

Cool, keep me posted 'cause I'm looking at doing the same. I also have a 97 Spyder GS so we can trade notes. ;)

I think I'm going for the individual used parts approach instead of the star kit... it just seems like doing that I can save money and get better performance. If you know a good place on the net that I might be able to obtain some of those parts, that'd be nice too.

Thanks!

Kaiser...HAHA, can't believe you took a pic of the 4G64 turbo Spyder @ that SoCalDSM meeting. If I remember correctly, Eric C took a ride in it, but he told me it wasn't that fast since the Spyder wa shaving trouble and was only boosting less than 10psi.
17002, RE: Here...
Posted by eclipsekaiser, Mar-17-02 06:06 PM
actually I think Scott Grey took that picture for RRE.

But I seem to recall it running about 9 psi. seem pretty quick at the time. Lots of low end torque from that SOHC power plant.

So when are we going to turbo your car. Eric wants to sell his STAR stage two. You know you want to turbo now that Both Mike, James, and I are boosting...:P

Then why don't gs-t/gs-x owners buy one of those blocks build the internals and swap?

Engine swap you mean? That's a *whole lot* more work than just the change for the 4g64 engine.

Kaiser, just be patient with me...turbo time will come for me one day--hopefully, soon.

The reason why people won't swap to the 4g64, is because they think the 4g63 is better, there just isn't as many aftermarket parts for them, and the 4g63 is more popular. Not too many people have turbo'd the 2.4 yet, so it's all new, it's not like having the 2.0 where you can ask almost anyone on here for advice. We are a different and rare breed. But we do have the advantage though, we don't have to run high boost to match up with you guys, we have more compression and displacement stock. If the two engines are running the same boost, we will have the horsepower and torque advantage. But don't worry there will come a day when us heavier and nicer looking eclipses will be running circles around you guys. :)
