16469, CAI?? Posted by 99Eclipse, Mar-04-02 06:00 PM
Why do we need a longer ram CAI? Can't we use a short ram CAI? That would be cheesy if I was drivin a some water got into it.

well first of all, CAI stands for Cold Air Intake. and a short ram isnt a CAI its jes a short ram intake. the reason we add more piping is to suck in that cooler denser air from the bottom/front of the car. the denser(colder) the air the more oxygen it carries which in the long run produces more power.better than suckin in all that warm/hot air from your engine bay. and dont worry bout gettin water in there. unless its completely submurged then it will be fine. if it really bothers you jes get a bypass , god damm forgot what it was called. jes luweeez. somebody help me here. well hope this answers your question

I know it stands for Cold Air Intake. I just would rather go with a short ram if we can.

then use a short ram

This sounds like a general question to me..

of course you can just go with a short ram intake. It wont give u as much power as a CAI would, but you would still feel a gain

16476, RE: CAI?? Posted by mitsuman, Mar-05-02 07:06 AM
ic what you mean. your talkin bout getting a short ram and custom making like a cold air box to o around the filter?? well if you think about it what are you doing there? your ramin cold air from the bottom/front of the car. it will still take in all those lil drops of water. so unless you get a short ram. lil bits of water will allways be a factor. but its not a factor to worry about. hope that helped later

Well I plan on running a Dual Stage direct-port NX n2o setup and want a good intake. What's the best intake to go with as far as performance and reliability is concerned? I was thinkin about an Injen because they look bad ass and I heard they were good. But I want to get the best im used to a turbo and nitrous is kinda new to me along with headers and intakes.

<<This sounds like a general question to me.. >>
It's NOT, a CAI is a performance mod, so it goes in the performance section, that should be extremely obvious. If you've got a question about something like a manufacturer recall on our cars, then that would go in the General forum. Why is it that some people just can't get it?
Kory's right.

hey, I have a friend that has a lowered honda civic hatchback (which I tell him is a gay ass wagon) with a aem cold air intake with no bypass valve. he ran through a three inch puddle and grenaded his engine(the filter wan't completely submerged). so if you go cold air always use a bypass valve.
|
16480, RE: CAI?? Posted by damasta, Mar-05-02 09:34 AM
He wasn't completely submerged so the bypass would have done nothing. The filter needs to be completely submerged to create enough vaccuum for the bypass valve to open and let air in through the valve as opposed to the filter. Partially submerged, there would not be a strong enough vaccuum for the bypass valve to operate correctly.
Here's a test you can perform if you want. Start the engine, remove the cone filter from the end of the tube, place you're hand over half of the opening, is the bypass valve doing anything? NO. Cover the entire end of the tube with your hand, the bypass is working right? Yes it is, actually the valve will probably start sucking in air when you're 3/4 to 7/8ths of the way covering the end of the tube. If you want you can RISK sticking a bucket of water HALF way over the cone filter and see if the valve does anything, I wouldn't risk it myself.
I'm not saying it's a gimmick or it doesn't work, I'm just saying that it only works under certain conditions, and I've talked to a few AEM peeps and they've told me what I've just told you.

1st that was pretty slick of you to move this post I was looking for it all over in general.. thanks for clarifying whats general and whats not.
2nd when in the hell would someone drive threw a puddle deep enough to sink there car all the way to the intake? If the by-pass valve only works when its fully submerged then that means that when some water hits it that water still goes into your motor causeing damage?

cai bypass.....Piece of SHIT.

16483, RE: CAI?? Posted by damasta, Mar-06-02 04:52 AM
You realize that these tiny little drops of water have to get through the filter which has microscopic holes? Water splashing on your filter happens alot and does nothing. Some idiots have driven through huge puddles and hydrolocked their engines, it's been done. I can't say they're idiots 'cause in some cases you can't see the puddle until you're too close to stop in time.
Honestly I don't know why small amounts of water hitting your filter doesn't do anything, like I said everything I said in that post was basically relayed from an AEM guy. What I do know is your engine can handle extremely small doses of water entering your combustion chamber, but when a hefty amount gets in there it won't compress and bang. Sometimes it's a huge bang, sometimes it's a very little bang and little happens and the engine can be fixed.
