16397, Retarted Motor Oil Question Posted by pocotheeskimo, Mar-04-02 01:49 PM
Hello, Basically retarted question here, what happens when you put more oil, i.e.; 5 quarts, even 6 maybe instead of the 4.5? What'll happen to the engine and other things? I think I put around 4.5-5 in instead of the 4.5 and I'm wondering what this will do to my engine/what i should do.. Thanks.

For one thing...you spelled "retarded" wrong =) lol
As for the extra oil...I wouldnt do it often, but I am almost sure nothing will be harmed. If your really sketch about it, then pull the plug and drain a tad...or maybe use a siphon pump or some shit..

Thanks, I told you it was retarded =) It wouldn't cause the the engine to run funny or anything though would it?

I just read somehwere, in the link from the synthetic oil topic about this.
It said something like, if you top off and put too much oil in it, there will be extra pressure in the engine, especially on the rear main seal, and this can cause your rear main seal to burst.
Check it out. I just read it, haven't seen it anywhere else so i'm not too sure.
update:
heres the link http://www.fernblatt.com/longhurst/engineoil_bible.html
check near the bottom at "Checking the oil in your engine, and topping up."

Yeah, I'd rather be slightly low on oil than have too much. Actually, I believe the manual calls for 4.25 quarts of oil. I always put 4.5 though, cause thats where it checks ok on the dip stick. As for the rear main bursting, yeah, that'd be bad. Though, more than likely you would have to have put something drastic like 7 or 8 quarts in it for the rear seal to burst open. If you've ever changed it yourself, you'd know how tight it fits, that and it has a spring loaded rim. Though, if it did burst you'd have a helluva leak. That and a slipping clutch.

If you just put a little too much in (like it sounds), you should be fine as far as I know. When I did that, it just burnt it off. I could smell burning oil a few times after I changed it.
...or maybe I was just sloppy and got a little oil somewhere it shouldn't have been :), but I don't think I did...

Putting in too much, like over 4.5 quarts will cause added pressure and will blow out every seal it can depending on the pressures it will reach. I found this out the hard way back when i was 16 in my 240sx.

I added a half quart over the "full" line last time with this result:

Dunno if it was a coincidence, but it seems kinda related.
