16368, cam gear Posted by 97GS AT, Mar-04-02 08:42 AM
oh well, I just received my cam gear from ptunning this afternoon, when I opened the box, I found only one cam gear was in the box. I suppose they sell in a pair? or one is normal? I paid around $100 for it and shd I order one more?

i believe you need to order one more. 2 gears, one for intake and one for exhaust.

Yep, need to order two (or one more in your case). One for the intake and one for the exhaust.

Since you have one right there, what do you think of the bolts on them, do they look cheesy or do they look like they are pretty strong?

Don't use those cheap bolts on that Fidanza cam gear. I think people had horror stories over at the Neon board. Get some better heat-treated bolts.

Well if your bolts broke, then you could bend valves or even pistons, and have to take apart the head and fix it. I bent my valves when my older style bolts flew off, don't know why still. Sorry, don't know what kind of bolts to recommend, but I figure heat treated ones with washers should be good (that's what I have now).

Yeah I have read some bad things about those gears because of the bolts but I haven't seen one up close to be able to deceide for myself. Go to an auto parts store and find some bolts and nuts and lock washers that are the exact same size and are 10.9 grade or 8 grade at the least. this should only run you like $10 or so. If one or 2 bolts come off you could still be fine. AEM's only have 3 on theirs but either way, if the cam bolts aren't tight enough, the gears can slip and the cam timing will be off and the pistons can hit the valves and thats a lot of work to fix that.
