I thought I read on the boards here that the fuel filter was in the engine bay by the firewall, but my chilton said it could be on the gas tank. I couldn't get under the car today to check it out, and I didn't see it by the firewall. So which one's the correct place for it?

I did a search, but i was getting conflicting info from the chiltons and from the board. I just wanted to get it cleared up. sorry if I was being redundant about it, just didn't want to have to extra work.

I have a 96 also. It's right in front of the right rear tire by the gas tank.

fuel filter swap, seems like a common thing...
here's the info i got:::I don't know how familiar you are with doing your own auto labor, but if you're used to doing things like this...it's VERY easy.

First, there is a hose not connected to the filter but attached just below it. You'll need a 12mm ratchet to remove it and bend/hold it out of the way so you can get to the filter.

Then you'll need a 19mm wrench to remove the bolts on either side of the filter. DO NOT remove the filter before removing the bolts. Once you loosen them a little gas will start to leak. Just wait a few seconds until it stops and then you can remove the bolts by hand. Each one should have a copper washer attached to it. Don't loose these because you'll need them.

Once both bolts are off, you can then remove the other two 12mm bolts that attach the filter to the frame. You'll then need to remove the clamp that is holding the filter and place it on the new filter. It's important to place the clamp in the exact same place that it was on the old filter.

Next, before you re-attach the filter to the frame, FIRST screw in both bolts with washers until hand tight. THEN attach the filter to the frame. Only after the filter is attached to the frame should you tighten the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts too tight. Nice and snug is enough.

Finally re-attach the rubber hose to the frame. Don't start the car but rather just turn the key until all the check lights are on. Then look under the car and make sure there aren't any leaks. If not, you've done well....

Thanks everyone, one last question, the chiltons says to relieve the fuel system pressure, but no one ever mentions doing that. Is it that step really needed? Not that it's hard to do, but I don't like doing things that don't need done. Thanks again.

when u loosen the 19mm bolts, have a towel handy, and get your eyes outta the way. shell pis about 1/2 liter on u, at least mines did. after shes done pissin, then remove the bolts..

just start the car and then pull the fuel relays the car will die and there should be no gas in the system.

that is what dino told me to do.
i have a 95..

they were on the drivers side near the brake fluid tank..

4 relays in a row there were the far left 2. just pop them out
