16087, Theory about my hard starts Posted by 96TSI AWD, Feb-28-02 03:03 PM
My car periodically has hard starts. I can hear the starter but just no turning over. then finally after holding the key turned for a long time it starts to rumble a little bit and then starts up, with foot on the gas. I changed the fuel filter, used heet. No change. I did realize however, that the car only does this if i dont let it idle for a minute or two before i shut it down. thas coo, the turbo needs to cool down anyway. But. Sometimes it still doesnt start. Another thing i noticed, rarely, if ever, does the gast tank release pressure when i get gas. I also read on dsmtalk somewhere that cars use the pressure in the fuel tank for that initial startup, before the fuel filter starts working. So putting, 2+2 together, im figuring that for some reason theres no pressure in my gas tank, and thats causing occasional hard starts. Possible????

I would think it's your starter going to shit. If it was a fuel problem, it would still crank over. Sounds to me like the starter is not "engaging". It's still turning but not extending to hit the crank or whatever the hell it turns....

i turn my key half way, or like one click, and i hear the pump cum on, and i wait til i cant hear it. then i turn her over and start up.
check your batt terminals, coca cola cleans em nicely (no joke) and the connection.

You can hear the car trying to start. Like the starter is trying to start it, but its just not starting. And when it finally does start, sometimes it feels like its going to die, it will rumble for a little bit, until i hit the gas and raise the rpms. I tried turning the key and listening for the fuel pump, but i dont hear anything??

My car did that when I tried to start it, turns out my battery terminals were dirty as shit. It wouldnt crank at all sometimes and when it did it would crank up and then die. The next time i would try and it started right up. Have you checked your terminals out???
Vegas my fuel pump is pretty loud too, even with my seats on I can hear it. I listen for mine b4 I turn the car on too .
