15905, 4g63 to 420a WTF??? Posted by low4life, Feb-26-02 01:22 PM
I've been the proud owner of a 2gnt for about 2 years now and in the performance and racing scene just as long. I just recently picked up a 1gnt and correct me if I'm wrong but isnt that just a 4g63 without the turbo??? If so....why in the hell did they ever change to the 420a?? Wouldnt it be twice as easy for us if they would have kept both aspirated versions of the 4g63 and carried into the 2nd Gens?? I'm sure theres a good reason for it, and I'm sure one of you knows what that reason is....let me know. This has been my "what the fuck" of the day.

I believe it lowered production cost using the "new" neon engine at the time in the joint venture cars. plus the dodge avenger was comming out (It was the IROC car in 94 if I remember correctly), and it probably looed better to consumers to have a chrysler engine available in their chrysler car. since all the fj cars were made basically on the same line, and people that bought non turbo eclipses at the time weren't really all that concerned with the power plant at the time. just that the car ran and coudl get them to the grocery store. that's what I think. I could be wrong.
A.D.P. bring it on............

I'd take a 1gnt engine in my car any day if I had a choice to start over. Then I'd convert is to a 4g63t pretty easily hehe :)

That was the 1.8 that had 92 HP
The 2.0 NT had 135

Oh ya, you're right. They had two NT models. I blame this all on Chrylser, and their joint venture that got broken up anyways. Having a 4g63 nonturbo would have been so much easier to turbo later on. Sorry, I just really prefer japanese cars and engines, and my parents even questioned the "Chrysler" engine in the car when we got it, cus they also don't trust domestic brands. But stupid me, being young, kept convincing them that it was a good car to get, even though I didn't get it til nearly 4 years later.

Hay low4life, let me ask you something. Was that scarcasm in your last post, I hope so. B/C how can someone, being a member of this board and an owner of the 2GNT Eclipse with a Stage 2, say f*ck Mopar? I don't get it. Please clarify your last post.

Have you no pride? Man you guys sicken me, this is a 2GNT site and the 2GNT's biggest feature is the 420A powerplant. I'm proud of my 420A. It's a better engine than the 4G63 is NT at least. Would be nice to have oil squirters but I'll take what chrysler gave me and make the best out of it. Imagine if the 420A was in the 1GNT how much better the 1GNT would be. Don't diss the 420A! I'm so proud of my engine that my autox number is 420! (no drug day!)

Sure, I'm proud of all you turbo guys that are pushing a lot of power through the 420a...I just don't have pride in my particular 420a. It seems that no matter what you throw on, if it's not a turbo, it will never be fast (as talking with Eric R. made me realize). I'm talking in street trim here. If you strip out your car, any car can be fast. In fact, I just heard about a civic in SD with 250 hp to the wheels, running 11's, but expected to run 10's next time at the track. That's with only 250 hp since the car barely weighs anything. But personally, if I had a 4g63 in my car, I would definitely have converted it to a turbo. I just can't afford to blow my engine like quite a few people I know, so that's why turboing my 2gnt is out of the question. I guess I should be proud of my car though - it was the fastest a/t at our last 2gnt meet hehe...I'm just sick of people asking me if my car is fast when they see it though. After I tell them all the mods, they would expect it to be fast, but it's more like "are you really flooring it?"

Hopefully Todd, Kyle, me and a few others can change your mind about that. There are Neons running 13's all motor out there. Yes it's lighter, the smaller wheels/tires give is a slight gearing improvement. But I think we can get some good numbers NA, an plan on trying. I see no problem on many people on the board with their turbos. Properly installed and tuned, and not trying to push too much boost on stock internals the car, the engine will run a long time.
I love the 420A, I own two!

And besides, the 420a IS a hemi. Spark plug in the center of the combustion chamber = hemispherical combustion chamber or "Hemi" for short.

Ya I hope one of you will prove me wrong! I really want to see a fast n/a 420a in an eclipse body (and not all stripped out but in basic street trim). I guess I just lost hope since our cars have been around for nearly 7 years, and no one has really broken 15.5 n/a as far as I know. Also, I think a big problem with turbos is a lot of people "don't" know how to tune it, which can easily cause it to blow. I know I certainly wouldn't know how hehe.

If you're no sure, I say play it on the safe side. Better too much fuel than not enough. The price of a catalytic converter or O2 sensors pales in comparison to a blown engine. That's why research is key, you'd probably find it much easier once you doveand started than you thought... which could be the trap, people push it too far because it does seem simple... oh well just rambling now.

NO NO NO NO!!! I leave the forum alone for a few hours and yer jumping to conclusions.
That WAS sarcasm when I said "fuck mopar"
I actually am proud of what my 420a has become, I raised it from a pup.
Basically all I meant to do is raise the question of how much more power we cold get up to if they gave us the NT 4g63,,, thats all guys.
