15273, New To Board Posted by UNSpooled95GS, Feb-20-02 04:08 AM
I got my Dark Green 95 GS four days ago and I am just now finding this board. When my car is idling, there is a fairly noticeable clunk that sounds like it is coming form the A/C pump.It does it with the A/c on and off. Also my power steering pump whines a little. Is this normal? Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.

A/C could be the ocmpressor clutch going out, P/S pump should be quiet so that might need to be fixed. Check you accessory bets and make sure they are tensioned tight enough.

Welcome to the board! My steering wheel was whining alot until i filled it with more power steering fluid. But it has and always will whine a lil, I wouldnt worry about it. As for the A/C, I'm not sure. But do you mean when u first turn it on? Cause mine does a loud thunk or click then its fine. Hope this helps!

It is when it is on and when it is off (the a/c) The power steering pump fluid is totally full (i used the ATF like the manual said) but i cant figure out this clunking noise. It sucks!!!!!!!!!!

I would say that the whining is our ps pump starting to go out. Usually they will make that noise when they start to go bad. It will prob start to leak before too long, but you still have some life left. The clunking noise if you are certain it is coming from the ac pump, is most likely the bearings going out on the compressor pulley, not the compressor clutch, since you said it makes the noise when its on or off, if it were the clutch, it would only do it when it was on, usually. Try to describe the clunking sound in more detail or maybe other words? Oh and, Welcome! I hope you got some money man, these cars beg for it!

It kind of like a loud clicking/clunking, and it's intermittent. It almost sounds like a knock, but It comes from the lower part of the engine bay (i am fairly sure it is thre compressor.) If it is the pully bearings, how much does it cost and where can I get the stuff????

The PS whines when fluid is low or going out. Usually low though. The clutch on a A/C comp will make a click inside the car, but it can be louder outside. Do you get cold air?? See if you can get some A/C gauges somewhere w/ R134 attachments. If it is your comp going, there is no real way for most "shady tree mech" to service them. Some need special pullers to get the clutch out and others don't. If it is your comp, just use the one you got as a core and get another one.
