I was taking to someone who is a machinest and has done engines for years and years, mostly race type stuff. He was telling me that the current school of thought about polished/honed stuff is that rough is better than smooth. He said that you need the roughness to help create turbulace for the air to flow better. Thoughts? replies? thanks

Actually I never thought of it in cars, but thats a cool idea. They have found sharks have rough skin so they can cut through water quicker. I dont think you could just add ridges, sharks have millions of years of evolution. It would take a lot of tuning and fabrication and probably wouldnt give much in hp gains, but I'm not sure. I can see something like that being done in F1 and trickling down to us. Maybe some body panels would give us less drag, it would look interesting though!

from what i've heard its still pretty smooth, but not glass smooth. near microscopic bumps. the analogie that i heard was a golf ball. the divits give it less wind resistance, therfore qiucker through your intake/head.

Where do you put the bumps, intake tube, tb, manifold, lower m? Would it work i the exhuast?

actualy i was talking about the factory surface inside the intake and head. A lot of people on the board have polished/ extrude honed there intakes and head i think. i was just asking if it was all that benifical with the logic i mentioned regarding the roughness. I didn't mean actualy doing a mod.

All I know is when I ported my manifold, my car ran smoothly to the redline. It didn't feel like I had to "force" it to high rpms above 6500. ________________________________________________________________________________________ current status - No 3rd Gear synchro

Rougher could be better it it actually does something organized top the air... like the barrel of a gun puts spin on a bullet. If there was a pattern and it somehow moved the air so it mixed better in the combustion chamber... maybe. But the casting in our manifolds is rough because it is cheap to do so, not because it helps. There is no pattern, just a rough casting.

I always thought the reason people got a port polish job was to open it up a little more to cram more air in.... More space=more air, add a lil more fuel and more zoom...:) Why else would we go turbo but to cram more air in??? Just a thought....
