ok, i know a fair amount about stand-alones. so this isnt a question about how they work, if you can change the fuel levels at different rpm's, i know that stuff. what i was wondering was why cant the computer compensate by itself for a rich or lean condition. i know you can do this by datalogging and going rpm by rpm. but why cant you tell the computer to keep you a little rich if you are running pump gas or just about right if you are on race gas. or keep the timing just right, not too much knock, not pulling too much timing out. now i know a stock computer cant do this and i'm not asking it to, it would be cost prohibative for mitsubishi. and i know that other standalones cant because thats not what they were designed to do. i just want to know if it possible for a stand-alone to do this at all. that kind of fuel managment would take some computing power but i dont think it would be that hard. ok, enough of my rambling, anybody have opinions

Stand alones will run to whatever parameters you want. All you need to do is have a couple different tunings. Load in different fuel maps and other calibrations for different situations. Have a street map and a race map, load whichever map is appropriate for the conditions. Going to the track load your race map.

Depending on the program it will make adjustments in timing etc, based on what you ask it to do. Just don't confuse a piggyback system with a true stand alone. A stane alone has a great power to tune and adjust.

My reply about why Mitsubishi didn't put more engineering time into the ecu... why would they? They don't engineer the cars for enthusiests (SP???). The car runs great if you don't do anything to it and you put what 99.9% of eclipse owners put in the gas tank... regular pump gas. I agree it would be nice if mitsubishi would have spent a bunch of time making the computer smarter, intake free flowing, exhaust free flowing, shorter shifts, great suspension, stiffer motor mounts, bigger throttle body, larger injectors, etc... but if all car manufacturers do that... the car would cost a LOT more and there would be less aftermarket parts companies.

I actually understand your question. I suspect it is a cost issue. If you notice however the lastest models are able to compensate. The Gen VII DFI for example now has volumetric efficiency based fuel maps with adjustment for atmospheric pressure from what I understand and not having seen one whereas the Gen VI is manifold pressure based. A MAF can compensate. A MAP uses predefined tables. That is what makes the difference on a stock car.

thank you for understanding the quesition murix. i must have worded it difficultly:) i didnt think about the cost side of making a computer that adaptable. i guess its better to get the product in the peoples hands and make them tune it, than making the computer cost $5,000 and making it tune itself. you get points for reading the question and anwsering the same one :) that would be nice to have one designed that way though. but then again i dont have that kind of money :(
