14770, 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Niclipse, Feb-14-02 02:57 AM
What car does the 2.4L 420a Motor originally come in?
Has anyone swapped this motor into their eclipse yet? If not, how do we know this will work?

isnt that the spyder motor
its a SOHC 2.4l

14772, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by JasonESi_T, Feb-14-02 03:14 AM
No, not the spyder. That's the 4g64 engine which is all Mitsu.
The 2.4 Chrysler used in all the swaps sits in the Liberty, Stratus, Cirrus, Breeze, Avenger, Sebring, PT Cruiser, Minivans, and the Neon SRT.
Of course there are lots of variations from the 1st gen to the second generations that are out now, but you get the idea.
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/24.html
This swap hasn't been performed in any eclipses yet (from what I know), but deductively speaking, any short block that'll work in a neon WILL work in an eclipse. Why? They're the same. :-)
Check out the newest Mopar NOW magazine. They have a section in there discussing the HRC turbo install AND the 2.0/2.4 liter swap. It also goes into detail regarding the differences between the two differences and other issues.

What about the 2.4L head. Will that go on a 2.0 bottom end?

14774, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Kory, Feb-14-02 03:36 AM
yes it will bolt up...
y would u do a sohc head on a 420 bottom? i don't think that is good at all.

the 2.4L 420a is a single overhead cam?

14776, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by DarkOne, Feb-14-02 04:00 AM
The Avenger/Sebring 420A is a 2.0L 420A identical to ours. The 2001+ A/S is a mitsu motor, i believe.
|
14777, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by JasonESi_T, Feb-14-02 04:07 AM
You're right Dino. The 3.0 liter V6 A/S engines are Mitsu engines. However, as I understand it, the 4 cylinder engines are 2.4 liter Chryslers. The same as in the PT Cruiser.
Oh, and for the above question in regard tot he 2.4 liter head. It's the same exact DOHC head on the neons. But, as you know, their heads and ours have the same bolt pattern and will correctly mount to any matching short block.

The 2.4 swap was done into an Eclipse, there was one not too long ago for sale on Ebay, dont have the link though or a pic, but it was done before...It was the Chrysler motor...

14779, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Niclipse, Feb-14-02 05:20 AM
yeah the Red eclipse, right? But wasnt that a v6?
|
14780, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Breezio, Feb-14-02 05:50 AM
If i remember right, the Breeze only has the 420a 2.0L version.. and it's SOHC.. and I used to drive one. good motor. had 137HP stock.

14781, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Michael_97RS, Feb-14-02 05:57 AM
I thought the swap was with a V-6 and I thought the motors in the new avengers were mitsu... Hmmm have to check some hoods at the autoshow.

Yes, that ebay swap was done with the Avenger 2.5 liter mitsu V-6.
You guys sure are pulling out all the close mitsu relatives of the Chrysler 2.4! ;-)
The only trick to getting the swap done in the eclipse will be the engine mounts. A couple of neon companies have already produced correct engine mounts for the 2.4 liter to mate with the neon. However, those mounts wouldn't work with the eclipse, so we'd need something custom.

14783, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by RyaN95i4, Feb-14-02 07:40 AM
the chrysler 2.4L was NEVER available in an Avenger/Sebring Coupe.
the 2.4L in the '01+ Stratus Coupe (avengers are not made anymore) and Sebring Coupe is the same MITSU 2.4L in the 3rd gen Eclipse. Just like 95-00 a/s is the same car as the 2nd gen eclipse, it is even more so for the 01+ cars.
The Serbing Sedans and Stratus Sedans are completely different cars than their coupe variant, and are 100% chrysler cars. The former cloud car series was changed and all names were dropped save the most popular two. They are avaialble with the 2.7L V6 and the 2.4L i4.
the entire chrysler name change thing was a means of streamlining the production line, but the roots still remain. the stratus coupe is actually the 2nd gen Avenger, and likewise is still eclipse based.
---
reread the last couple posts and saw lots of think so and maybes.
the v6 in the 95-00 A/S Coupes is a 2.5L mitsu 6g73. the v6 in the 01+ Stratus Coupe/Sebring Coupes is the 3.0L mitsu 6g72, same enigne in the 3rd gen eclipse.
The 95-99 breeze, like all cloud cars, came with a 2.0L SOHC, a 2.4L DOHC, or the mitsu 6g73 2.5L V6.
the 01+ Stratus COUPE and Sebring COUPE are 3rd gen eclipse essentially, and come with the mitsu 2.4L i4 4g74 or the mitsu 3.0L v6 6g72. the SEDANS come with the chrsyler 2.7L v6 or chrysler 2.4L i4
For the swap, your looking for the 2.4L out of a 95-00 cloud car (stratus, breeze, cirrus), PT Cruiser, 01+ Stratus sedan, 01+ Sebring sedan

Problem #1.Headers won't clear your firewall. Fix to problem #1-Notch firewall to accomidate header.
P#2.The block on the 2.4 is longer to accomidate the longer path the pistons have to make. -Need to mount the motor lower in the engine bay. Isn't their a differance between motor mounts?...with that in mind will the motor bolt up? Help me out guys...
P#3.Motor will sit low in engine bay exposing oil pan and oil filter. -need to remove balance shafts in motor and get Moroso oil pan for Neon and relocate oil filter.
Then will axels match up? guys?
If I was going full race and had a junker to drive other days I would attempt it but I say stick with your 2.0L 420A.
Much easier/cheaper to make power with this (2.0L)motor than the down time on installing a 2.4L in your car.

>Problem #1.Headers won't clear your firewall. > Fix to problem #1-Notch firewall to accomidate >header. >
Use the head thats on your car now. then you dont even have to rewire everything
>P#2.The block on the 2.4 is longer to accomidate the longer >path the pistons have to make. > -Need to mount the motor lower in the engine >bay. Isn't their a differance between motor mounts?...with >that in mind will the motor bolt up? Help me out guys... >
The 2.4L is ~1" taller. if you dont have 1" of clearance to spare, cut out the framing on your hood. Hell, my neon buddy did that just to save weight.
>P#3.Motor will sit low in engine bay exposing oil pan and >oil filter. > -need to remove balance shafts in motor and >get Moroso oil pan for Neon and relocate oil filter. > >Then will axels match up? guys?
Cant use the moroso oil pan on our cars anyways. we have a cross beam where the neon oil pan is. so you have to reuse your oil pan. axels have nothing to do with the motor. your tranny will bolt up to the 2.4L block, you keep ur current tranny. Custom engine mounts are needed, but thats a given
>Much easier/cheaper to make power with this (2.0L)motor than >the down time on installing a 2.4L in your car.
There is NO replacement in Displacement ;) a stock 2.4L only makes 10 more hp, but 40 mor ft-lbs of torque. more displacement will only ampify existing mods, like turbo! :)

14787, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Michael_97RS, Feb-14-02 09:19 AM
I would hope that with eliminating the balancing shafts we could bolt up our oil pan and that would take care of clearance issues with cross members, possibly allow an unmodified 2GNT header to bolt up. It all custom work and uncertainty since no one has done it at this point

There IS a replacement for displacement. Its called:
High PSI, lots of CFM, and a lot of NOS! :)

14789, RE: 2.4L 420a Motor Posted by Michael_97RS, Feb-15-02 05:37 AM
buahaahaa, nice Kiku!
But why not both?

a 2.4L 420a and a 2.0L 420a, with the same mods, and everything else equal, the 2.4L will ALWAYS make more power.
there is NO replacement for displacement. you can make a small engine perform like a bigger engine, but a bigger engine w/ the same level of prepping will ALWAYS make more power, all things being equal.

yeah, but we're all poor biatches so we should go for the most cost-effective solution ;) Why not just be nice to Gary and go with the stroker kit, that way you don't have to do any fabbing and you'll have a practically new engine.
as a sidenote thanks for the clarification Ryan, i was wondering whether the 2.4 in the new sebring and stratus were chrystler or mitz, when'd you graduate fromt he school of diamond-star :)?

Actually, when/if i do a rebuild, the stroker kit is at the top of my list...i would like to see how it runs first tho. i already know how the 2.4L block runs ;)

I saw the 2.4L Turbo Neon at the Detroit Auto Show. That car is going to be bad. Producing 205 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Wow, look at that torque. And this is all toned down for us Americans. They say you can add 10% to 15% more hp with a few mods. Someone has to do this swap. I bet we will see this become a common swap in the future.
