14741, Hit the rev limiter today...
Posted by fasterGS, Feb-13-02 09:41 AM
I was trying to pass someone this morning and hit the rev limiter... the car lurched real bad so I quickly upshifted. Is this something that could hurt the car? I shoulda been watching the tach when I downshifted.....

It's not bad if it happens ever once in a while, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

I'm determined that this is what happened the day my power steering belt broke. Might have just been coincidence, or time, but as i hit too high revs, my car lurched like something broke, and next thing i knew my power steering was gone. probably just a bad power steering belt couldn't hold the stress.

so i would say just be careful.

don't worry about it that is the whole reason there is a rev limiter.

I hit 2nd a long time ago when i was supposed to hit 4th, lunged foward, i swear it bounced past rev-limit just for a sec, i took it out of gear, put it in 5th, no power steering, both belts jumped off and shreaded, gauge cluster lights poping on right and left, but no engine damage, big sigh of relief :-)

I hit my rev limiter quite a bit. Not like every time I drive, but sometimes. My car has 90000 miles on it, I've had it since new, and never had any repairs except a thermostat, and timing belt. I'm not suggesting you drive like I do, but I don't think it's bad for the engine.

So is downshifting safe if you dont do it all the time?

What you talkin bout Willis?? YOu can downshift all you want, what I am talking about is letting the rpms get past 7200... thats when your car says "nu-uh" and quits going.

I've hit mine quite a bit while racing out of first gear, just lurches and you loose the race, never busted anything though. I'm sure its probably not the best on the motor, but at the same time, not a huge concern probably.

Well I do it all the time and I also downshift and shit and I have broken rockers and 2 fucked trannys to prove it.

With the STOCK 2gnt rockers, overreving (past 7000) is bad for the rockers if done a lot. I do it a lot. I hit the 7200 rev limit at least 3 or 4 times a day. The design is bad and they break toward the end that pushes the valve.

Chrysler redesigned the rockers on the engine in the PT cruiser and they fit in our car in place of our rockers. You can also get the PT lifters which have a larger oil hole in them.

i did that too super20g...i went from 3rd to 2nd!!!...ouch, i swear i hit 8500 rpms. yes it can be done...i know u get fuel cut but u let the clutch out in 2nd doing 80 and see what u rev to,..lol...my belts blew off so fast i didn't know what hit me...haha. no damage thank god, but i agree, hitting the rev limiter is ok, thats what its there for, just don't do it alot, puts added and unnecessary stress on your drivetrain and internals.
