14439, HELP!!!! BELTS SHREDDED!
Posted by ExcessTalonESi, Feb-10-02 07:01 AM
Hey guys, I was racing my friend's Chrysler laser last night and all of a sudden I lost power steering so I pulled over and we looked and there is a belt at the top right part of the engine bay, it has about 5 ridges on it....it's about 1 inch wide and a 1/4 inch thick. Anyway, it's shredded. Also, there is a little belt down below that is about a 1/4 inch wide that looks a little fraid on the left hand side. Anyone know what these belt are for? I am guessing the top belt is my power steering...what's the one down below? Thanks for your help! I am going to replace them both A.S.A.P. Is it safe to drive with the belts in the condition they are in? TIA

This is a very common problem....don't sweat it.

Just go to your local auto store and buy a belt $5-15 (they will look up which one for you) and it takes maybe 10 minutes to replace.

The belt that have the 5 ridges is the powersteering and AC belt. The one below has 4 ridges its the alternator belt.

Well, my dad came and helped me with the belt. He got the belt on and tightened down. Well, he ended up breaking the bolt from the idler pulley on the powersteering setup. So next time this happens....it's going to be a real BITCH to get that belt tightened down. Hmm....he also bought a new alternator belt, but we haven't put it on. I guess the reason why the bolt broke from what I heard him say earlier was that the bolt was put in crooked or something. Anyone have any ideas on how to get that SOB out for the next time I have to do that? Thanks for all your help so far guys!
