137996, coolant sensor hose adapter?

How accurate is the hose adapter that is installed between two hoses or in-between a cut hose? I read somewhere that it isn't very accurate because it is after the thermostat and it would be useless if your thermostat were to just shut. Anyone install one or have anything to say on the subject? Thanks...
