Hey just joined to get help with my 95 420a eclipse. I use this site a lot a have been searching for this problem, I have found similar problems but usually on turbo 420's or a similar problem but a little different.
Here's the problem. The car drives fine until you give it a lot of gas. It acts like it hitting rev limiter. If I give it a little throttle I can get it past 5k Rpms but floored it hit about 4k and that's it. Checked for codes with the key on/off method and get code 36 (secondary air) which is for a recall that may be unrelated( recall was already performed). Car also has problem starting after sitting for an hour or more but once started will start back up fine. I changed the fuel filter last night and gas was coming out dirty. It seemed to be fixed right after I changed it but problem came back after a little bit of driving. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time

Check your map sensor switch it out with a good one and see what happens. The starting issue is probably the coil and spark plugs mostly likely. I had the exact same problems and thats what fixed mine.

Ok i changed plugs, wires , map sensor, and fuel filter still having the problem. Here is a video of what it does. http://youtu.be/DYXwlItphBc anyone have this problem and fixed it?

Try getting the CEL scanned by an OBD2 scanner. I believe that even the 95s had the same OBD2 plug you could use. Code 36 seems to be some emission air pump that you dont have.

I forgot to mention I fixed the engine light. I used a 5.6k ohm resistor because the injection system is removed. Only code I get now is for my speed sensor. Speedometer does not work.

You can verify the sensor by *carefully* removing it from the trans and spinning it in a drill.

I highlight *carefully* because if, while removing it, you knock the pinion gear off the sensor into the trans, you're boned. You'll then have to remove the trans and open it to extract the gear.

if the speedo responds when the sensor is spun, then chances are the speedo ring gear has fallen off the diff. Stick your finger in the speed sensor hole and see of you can feel that plastic gear the speed sensor pinion spins on. If you can move it around to a large degree with your fingers (or can't find it at all), it's probably come free from the diff. You'll have to drop the trans to replace it.

Ok thanks ill test the speed sensor. I just got a new code today( code 25) for the iac. Could this be why I'm not able to rev past 5k? My idle is usually normal sometimes drops to almost 0 when I'm driving and press the clutch.

Have you let the car sit for a while? A couple years back I crashed my 97 Talon and let it sit for the winter without doing any sort of winterizing (I know dumb me). When I finally fixed the motor issues with it I drove it and it did the same thing as your car. Everything seemed good until 4500RPM then it would cut out. So what I did to fix it was to drive it until the gas level went down low enough then filled it all the way with 92 octane and put some Lucas fuel injector cleaner in it. And magically the problem is gone. Also I never changed the fuel filter or injectors. Still drives good today and I drive it hard.

Not sure if the car sat before I bought it in December. I have used injector cleaners a couple times with premium fuel with no changes to the problem. I have now changed map sensor, fuel filter, plugs and wires, coolant temp. Sensor and also have a new catalytic converter. I have a new check engine light code for iac but I do t think its related. Maybe for the hard start. I pretty much give up trying to figure it out until I can put some money together to bring it to a shop. Any more suggestions would still help. Thanks

If the video I watched was of your actual car then. To me it sounds like the ignition is out of timing too advanced. I had a Talon that the CAM that "reports" the CPS had slipped a few teeth. Seemed my idle pulley and tensioner pulley failed the bearing has fallen out which made my timing belt too slack.

sometimes too, the hydraulic tensioner is going bad and does not hold proper force and gives a chance for the belt to slip. then you cam gears are out of timing. I lucked out I did not bend any valves.

check out you belt for slack and all the rest that I mentioned. Let us know.
