I am trying to get off my crankshaft pulley for timing/water pump/head gasket change and I'm confused. It appears that when I do finally get the pulley off the engine, it will slam into the body of the car. I cannot just yank the thing out through the wheel well, it looks like it will hit the inside of the engine bay.

There is about 2 inches between the pulley and the body. Is this okay or do I have to drop the engine more? Right now the front motor mount is loose and the passenger motor mount is completely off. I tried pushing down on the motor and it won't hunker down enough.

I read on this site that I would have to take out a body mount or something?

Any help would be appreciated. This seemed a lot easier in the write-ups.

Yes, you will have to drop the engine lower. Remove the crossmember, you might need to remove the rear or trans mount, but you might get away with just the crossmember. Also make sure you get/rent, the right pulley remover.

Thanks for the quick reply. I already started to bend a puller my cousin had on hand but I'm going to O'Riley's tomorrow to get a 5 ton 3-jaw.

I really hope I don't have to remove the rear motor mount since it would be a pain. When you say crossmember, where is it exactly? Is it the part of the frame that the front motor mount rests on? I search my FSM and only found info on the rear xmember.

This is what you were referring to, yes? If so, it makes me nervous the engine will fall on me. Oh well, that's what the floor jack is for..I guess.

That is correct, and no, the powertrain won't fall on you.

Heat the pulley with a torch and it'll come off much easier.

I've had strep throat for the past few days. I'll come back to this thread (and the DSM) once my antibiotics begin to work.

Earlier in the project I took out the front motor mount bolt and later put it back in (in an attempt to jack the engine up higher). I accidentally put the bolt through one of the holes in the bushing. The engine couldn't sit low enough. So I just took the bolt out completely and got the engine to sit on the front crossmember. Everything works well now.
