Hey, what is everyone's average oil consumption on their 420A non-modified? I am trying to narrow down why mine is using oil and would like to fix the problem. Does anyone have a fix or could you recommend any trouble spots to look for? Also, what oil has everyone used to remedy the consumption. I've heard these engines are known for using quite a bit of oil. I have 155K on mine now. Thanks for the input!

It leaks out of the valve cover if your gromments are bad. Just push on a corner and see if it moves. Burning past rings or a big one is leaking through valve seals. Thats just starters

I just replaced the Valve Cover Gasket and it's not leaking anywhere around there. Is there any type of oil treatment that would help? I've never tried anything like that.

With that many miles, hopefully it's already been replaced at least once. If not, you're driving on borrowed time.
You DO NOT want to break a TB. The results can be ugly, costly and potentially fatal to a 420a {or any other interference engine}.

As for oil consumption, how much are you talking about? A quart a week? Month? Every couple of days?

Then again, you could always take the "My car has a self-changing oil system." line of thought. lol

I changed the TB at 100K. As far as the consumption goes, I was putting in about two or three quarts every 3K. Now, that has declined some because of the VCG, but not a whole lot. I just replaced that and am due for an oil change. I need to figure out what oil I want to try and change it. I've thought about synthetic but I'm scared. LOL. I don't want any new leaks.

I've read a lot about Mobil 1 HM. I might try it and hope I see no leaks. Anyone try that over 100 or 150K and create problems?

ive had 2 motors in mine and they both had bad valve seals. for the longest time i wasnt sure what it was but when i started doing car stereo comps again, i noticed when i leave the show it smokes real bad from just sitting and idling for a long time. under normal conditions it dosnt ever smoke, just after idling for long periods of time. if your not sure if your valve seals are bad, just start your car and let it idle for 20 min or so and then go drive it. if it smokes real bad when you do, especially when you accelerate, you have bad seals. mine use to leak around the vcg as well
