Reason asking is there is a 270 amp alternator that is for sale for the 99-2005 neons. Do not know if they are compatible but having a alternator that puts off 3x the electricity as a stocker is definitely worth it at high rpms I would be saving a ton of hp

Have you compared the part numbers for both at any of the online parts retailers?

If you did, you would have found your answer.

Will it fit? Maybe. But they are not the same out-of-the-box.

Actually, I've wondered this myself (I've parted out a few Neons as well as all the 420a's I have done).

Dave you know it could be a very simple difference if the part numbers are different. Could even be amperage. The question would be, what is the difference?

I don't know, but the best bet would be to get one in your hands and see if there are physical differences. You can then check the specs to see if they are electronically compatible.

I know the stud and 2-connector for the field wiring control are the same.

Most aftermarket parts catalogs place the Eclipse Alt @90 Amps and the Neon Alt @85 Amps. So something to take with a grain of salt.

This sounds backwards. If it generates more electricity, it's going to be sucking away more hp to do so. You can get anything for free.

well it works off of a pully. Only if it takes more force to turn it yes but if it is the same amount of force to do a cycle as a stocker no. knowing they use newer bearings compared to the used stock bearings on the alternator all depends but it is a known fact stock is only 90 amps so three times the electricity will help the multiple revolutions of the spark plugs out in higher rpms.So with both are arguments out there if the bearings are better on the 270a is what determines the amount of force needed to turn it on the pulley is the question.

I did the Saturn one and I loved it. Unfortunately it was on my 2G turbo. You're back at square one with a 2gnt. Have no idea what will fit/work.

You also have to take into account the electrical load it and its efficiency. IIRC the more load the stronger the magnetic field making it harder to spin

well and that was my point. It depends if the bearings are better and how much force it takes to turn it a revolution compared to stock but regardless more electricity at higher rpms will help the spark plugs distribute more spark but like you said if it takes more force to turn it that puts more stress against the timing.

Well wouldn't the voltage regulator be the same for either one. If all conditions were perfect it would produce double voltage when rpm doubles so i would think that the regulator kicks in at around 1500 rpm and starts to limit its output. I may be wrong do NOT base a decision off that but its how I see it. I would look into the Saturn one. It had been done before.

I will say though that the 160Amp alternator i used was one of the BEST upgrades i did. i went through 4 or 5 stock alternators for all of them to take a Sh*t on me. With this Saturn Alternator ive never had an issue since i installed it. AND the saturn alternators are a really good price which you can find in higher amp. sizes also*

Ive fitted a couple other alternators to the 420a but i found the Saturn alternator to bolt on pretty easily. But the one i used was a "1 wire" alternator so i didnt have to rewire connectors and such.

talked to dc high output alternators and they have a 420a alternator 270a output. They told me it was 15mm bigger in diameter than stock. My question is will this be a problem with hooking up my ac? I still want ac.

AC will be fine. It's on other sided of the motor. If its the pulley that is the 15mm larger just get a slightly larger belt. You can just measure it to see.
